Industry News The Liquid Wrench brand announced plans to reformulate its aerosol lubricants in accordance with 2014 Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) regulations, which limit penetrants, multi-purpose lubricants, chain lubricants, rust preventative and rust control lubricants to a maximum of 25% VOC. As well, the brand is committed to reducing VOC levels for all their aerosol products to 0% by 2016. The costs associated with reformulating products to meet the new VOC standards are expected to impact retail prices, said the company. Wal-Mart recently announced that, beginning in January 2015, it will require suppliers to provide online public ingredient disclosure for items sold at Wal-Mart. This comes as a part of its Policy on Sustainable Chemistry in Consumables. Wal-Mart and Target have both announced initiatives including calls for expanded ingredient disclosure, reduction and elimination of priority chemicals of concern and safer substitution as a result of consumer demand. The 8th edition of the Paris Aerosol & Dispensing Forum will be held Feb. 5–6, 2014 at the Espace Champerret, Porte de Champerret, Paris, France. The British Aerosol Manufacturers’ Association (BAMA) published its Annual Report for 2012-13, including the financial report and accounts for the year ending Dec. 31, 2012. The Report indicates that the UK aerosol sector is in “buoyant shape,” with highlights including the increase in aerosol fillings by 5% year on year. In the Chief Executive’s Report, Dr. John Morris discusses the impact of the 3rd Amendment to the Aerosols Dispensers Directive to bring it into line with Classification, Labeling & Packaging (CLP). As a result, the Association will soon be issuing the latest (5th) amendment to the BAMA Standard. BAMA and its members engaged in many activities, including work by committees responsible for policy and strategy on key areas which include commercial & planning, the environment, operational safety, packaging & contents, and volatile substance abuse. Highlights of the year were the Annual BAMA Awards 2012 and a survey amongst householders demonstrating how successful recent campaigns have been in persuading local authorities and members of the public to recycle their empty aerosols. Endura SpA announced it has received funding from the European Commission– Research European Agency (REA) for a new project. Under the terms of the grant, Endura together with its partners in the EU, have been awarded about €1 million ($1.34 million) for their EcoSyn Project. The goal of the EcoSyn Project is to develop environmentallyfriendly synergists for use in formulations with insecticides, for applications in agriculture, household and in public health. This should enable a reduction in insecticidal active applied, resulting in reduced adverse effects on beneficial insects such as bees.
