doors and share their technology was S.C. Johnson (SCJ) in Racine, WI. Steps had been taken by SCJ, who had long been using hydrocarbon propellants, to provide a major step forward toward a safer technology for our future. We also visited Peterson Puritan, Reckitt & Colman (now Reckitt Benckiser), G. Barr Co. and CCL in Canada, just to name a few. All the companies fully cooperated by sharing all their safety systems openly, after which a committee was formed to write the First Edition of Hydrocarbon Propellants: Considerations for Effective Handling in the Aerosol Plant & Laboratory. This First Edition took two full years to compile and Ken Vos of SCJ and yours truly co-chaired the First Edition. Two complete rewrites of the First Edition have been reformed along with one revision in 1984 that covers Dimethyl Ether (DME). This handbook has played a major role in building the outstanding safety record of aerosol products manufacturing over the past thirty years. The industry has changed significantly during this time. In response to this change, a CSPA subcommittee was formed in the late 1990s to update this valuable tool. The product of that effort was an updated manual retitled, AEROSOL PROPELLANTS: Considerations for Effective Handling in the Aerosol Plant & Laboratory. The title change reflects the addition of several commonly used propellants not covered in the original edition. That Second Edition was published in 1999 and has gone into several printings and is now commonly referred to as the CSPA Aerosol Propellants Safety Manual. More recently, a new subcommittee was formed under the CSPA Aerosol Manufacturing & Storage Standards Committee to further update the manual. The resulting 2010 Third Edition provides updated information from the past 11 years. Jim Bloome, VP of R. A Jones, chaired both rewrite efforts. Thanks to Dan Minogue, 1980-1981 CSMA Aerosol Division Chairman & CAPCO Founding Chairman, for research support. SPRAY December 2013 Spray 33
