Plastic spray containers are not a new concept—there are products in non-aerosol plastic spray containers in virtually every consumer product category in every country in the world. It only makes sense that plastic aerosols are the next step in the evolution of plastic containers. Plastic aerosols have their challenges—mainly from the regulatory sector—but Spray spoke to two companies who are confident all challenges can be met and plastics will be seen on store shelves in the very near future. Petapak since 1999 Petapak Aerosol International Corp. was “founded on a comprehensive knowledge of the plastic industry and whose core business is the development of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) aerosol technology.” The concept of Petapak was born in 1999 when preliminary work was commenced on the design and manufacture of a PET aerosol container. Headquartered in Sydney, Australia, Petapak also has a corporate office in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and a sales office in Mexico City, Mexico. Mark Terracciano is currently CEO; Asim Salameh is President, Robin Fester is VP Global Operations; and Esther Salameh is COO. According to the company, Petapak’s advantages include cost efficiency; enhanced marketability utilizing the transparent nature of the PET package; and shorter lead times. Petapak can utilize shrink labels, self adhesive labels and silk screen printing. Petapak Technology uses only PET plastic. The Petapak aerosol container has been designed to be compatible with aerosol filling lines around the world, and in doing so utilizes a 1" internally crimped valve. The idea was to create a PET aerosol package which was comparable in performance to the metal and aluminum aerosol containers currently on the market. Petapak technology is protected by patent, therefore eliminating any chance of replication. Since its development in 1999, continued research, development and testing have been undertaken to progress the idea from vision to reality. The Petapak aerosol container has successfully undergone testing by a number of organizations around the world and the technology is now ready for commercialization. 38 Spray December 2013 More plastic aerosols are poised to hit shelves. “Currently, the European Aerosol Federation (FEA) is in the process of having the European Commission ratify its Plastic Aerosol directive, which we understand will become operational in 2014,” explained CEO Mark Terracciano. “This directive is the operational guideline for commercializing plastic aerosol in Europe that will allow for the smooth commercialization of plastic aerosols there. “As far as North America is concerned, the U.S Dept. of Transportation (DOT) and the U.S. National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) are primarily the two bodies overseeing the introduction of plastic aerosols into the market,” Terracciano continued. “Special exemptions and approvals will need to be obtained from these bodies before plastic aerosol containers can be commercialized in North America. Petapak is currently working with customers in both Europe and North America for anticipated launches by Quarter 3 to 4 of 2014.” New developments Petapak has recently finalized its latest and final bottle, Terracciano Aerosol Containers from Petapack Aerosol International Corporation
