The CSPA celebrates its centennial... Editor Ava Caridad, Editor The year 1914 saw the advent of The Great War—later known as World War I—an event that arguably dragged global civilization into the modern world as we know it today. I look upon it as the true threshold of the 20th century, as it ushered in modern warfare, modern medicine, modern politics, customs and clothing. Many other things happened in 1914: In the U.S., Charlie Chaplin made his film debut, President Woodrow Wilson officially made Mother’s Day a holiday, baseball legend Babe Ruth began his major league career with the Boston Red Sox and the U.S. Federal Reserve Bank officially opened for business. Overseas, Russia’s Saint Petersburg became known as Petrograd, Ireland was granted Home Rule, the Belgians made the first successful non-direct blood transfusion using anticoagulants and the Panama Canal was inaugurated with the passage of the SS Ancon. For our industry, the most notable event in 1914 was the creation of the Consumer Specialty Products Association (CSPA), which was then called the Insecticides Manufacturers Association. Located in New York, NY the formation of the new association was a direct response to the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture’s enactment of the Federal Insecticide Act of 1910. The group provided a forum in which businesses that participated in the pesticides trade could discuss and respond to regulatory issues relevant to their industry. The group soon became known as the Insecticides & Disinfectants Manufacturers Association (IDMA) and then the National Association of Insecticide & Disinfectant Manufacturers, Inc. (NAIDM) in 1932. Membership increased with a variety of new businesses linked by their usage of chemical ingredients, and in 1949, the name was changed again to the Chemical Specialties Manufacturers Association, Inc. (CSMA). Also in 1949, the association formed a new division—the Aerosol Division (currently the Aerosol Products Division). CSMA relocated its headquarters from New York City to Washington, DC in 1974 to establish a presence in closer proximity to the federal lawmakers introducing new bills that would have a direct impact on industry. Chris Cathcart was named President in 2000 and the name of the association was changed to the Consumer Specialty Products Association. As the CSPA prepares for the launch of its year-long 100th Anniversary celebration at the Annual Meeting in Ft. Lauderdale this month, all of us at Spray commend it for its commitment to industry and endurance in the legislative and regulatory process. We look forward to the next 100 years…
