December 2013 Spray 21 Green Chemistry as formulating products with chemicals that are gentler for consumers. She also explained that biocatalysis is a process historically used by the pharmaceutical industry for ingredient manufacturing. Its use is now migrating into specialty dermatology products, especially anti-aging active ingredients. Eastman set out to use biocatalysis, or enzymatically manufacturing ingredients, to manufacture ingredients more cost effectively (Eastman’s GEM technology is the process for producing chemicals enzymatically which generates much less waste, uses much less water and is considered a more Green process). It is an industry axiom that no one wants to pay more for Green, so after successfully applying biocatalysis to antiaging actives,  the company set out to identify higher volume ingredients used in personal care products that could be generated from this process. Gary Knopeck, Honeywell Technical Manager, presented Propellants & the Environment. In the development of 1234ze several years ago, Honeywell had actually set out to find a new refrigerant to replace hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) 134a with a molecule that would have a low global warming potential (GWP). As it turned out, the material worked as a propellant. Knopeck discussed the reasons why new materials such as 1234ze require so many years of development. One reason is that toxicological studies have to be done sequentially and there is no short cut. It is also an expensive undertaking requiring the investment of millions of dollars, as subsequent tests require thousands of pounds of material and years of testing. The resulting aerosol propellant helps reduce the carbon footprint of products that use it. Knopeck explained that using a duster product packaged with 1234ze  vs 134a is like saving the emissions of 39 gallons of gasoline. He also pointed out that the California Air Resources Board (CARB) has agreed to exempt 1234ez as a volatile organic compound (VOC). The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) had already approved the exemption. Knopeck SAPRY Natale
