School honored for aerosol recycling initiative 18 Spray December 2013 South Africa Hairspray, shaving foam show You’ve got to reduce, reuse and recycle every day. That’s the message that was chanted passionately by the Silverton Primary School students in October as they received the Aerosol Recycling Initiative (ARI) Gold Can Award at their school in Pretoria, South Africa. “Research shows that many people are unaware that aerosol cans are 100% recyclable,” said Philip Cloete, Chairman of AMA of South Africa. “We recognized the importance and accepted the responsibility to create awareness about the recycling qualities of these cans.” As part of this recycling initiative, AMA partnered with Silverton Primary School to develop a catchy song and music video to help teach youngsters about the importance of recycling and the impact it can have on the environment. The music video on YouTube (http:// www.youtube.com/watch?v=iDGa-1f5I24) has received a remarkable following from students. Silverton Primary School has been recycling all of its outdated textbooks and all scrap paper generated at the school for the past few South Africa saw an almost 1% increase in 2012 in aerosol fillings and imports, compared to 2011, according to The Aerosol Manufacturers’ Association of South Africa (AMA). According to the AMA, the Total Market marginally increased in unit terms from 261,567 in 2011 to 263,960 in 2012; the Insecticide and Car Care categories declined the most significantly. Deodorants saw a strong performance by local producers. The Spray Paint category is another example of undue stress from imports, and unfair trading practices. Local Production showed 3.23% growth, from 240.57 million in 2011 to 248.35 million in 2012. Filled Imports grew 52% to 32.11 million in 2012 from just over 21 million in 2011.
