Letter to the Editor...
Industry vet reaches out
It is very easy to complain, and we are all very good at it. However, it’s
far less common for someone to take the time to send us a handwritten
letter telling us their story and how SPRAY and the aerosol industry
fits into it. We received the following letter from long-time industry
professional Mr. Bob Jacobsen of the now defunct Continental Can Co.
We wanted to share the letter with readers, who will appreciate the look
back to the mid-20th century when the aerosol industry was young and you
could catch a lift to work in a Hudson.
For more on another industry veteran with a story to tell, see page 34 for
a tribute to SPRAY’s Technical Editor, the legendary Monty Johnsen.
To whom it may concern: Spray Technology,
I have been in the aerosol industry since I graduated from Port Richmond
High School (Staten Island, NY) in January 1949.
I was a temporary employee in the laboratories of Colgate-Palmolive in
Jersey City (NJ). Ken Hansen, a Wagner College graduate on Staten Island,
where I lived, worked at Colgate in the lab after graduating from Wagner
College (with a degree) in Chemistry.
He drove me to work in his 1937 Hudson.
After graduating from Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island, I
went to work at Continental Can Co. on the third shift—aerosol lines. From
there, I entered service. When I returned from service, I rejoined Continental.
I can’t recall how many years I have subscribed to (SPRAY’s predecessor)
Aerosol Age, et al. But thank you and I look forward to (it) each month.
Bob Jacobsen
