Recycling Household Care product packaging is far from universal behavior,
as only 48% of U.S. consumers report recycling most of the Household Care
packaging they use. While local regulations may contribute to the relatively
low recycling rate, lack of understanding or inconvenience may be barriers
to more frequent recycling for some. –Mintel
Pivotal packaging…
Packaging will continue to play a more pivotal role in
the Household Care market as brands look to not only
convey benefits and product information, but also
shape the user and shopping experience, said Mintel.
Packaging will also serve as a way to build a brand’s
value, encourage trial and maintain loyalty. Spray

Impulse shoppers favor cleaning products
A new study, Control Deprivation Motivates Acquisition of Utilitarian Products,
published in a recent issue of the Journal of Consumer Research, suggests that
people get a kick out of spending money on the hoof, but they typically end up
buying necessities instead of luxury products.
“Consumers who experience a loss of control are more likely to buy products
that are more functional in nature, such as screwdrivers and dish detergent,
because these are typically associated with problem solving, which may enhance
people’s sense of control,” said the report.
In one instance, participants were asked to recall a situation in which they felt
a high sense of control after shopping; they ended up buying practical products at
the supermarket, such as household cleaners and cooking ingredients. The study
found that shopping for even the most boring household items is enough to satisfy
the cravings of compulsive shoppers and that impulsive shopping doesn’t need to
have an adverse impact on a person’s finances.
