Singlet-state quenchers such as Polycrylene S1 provide faster, more powerful ways to prevent or slow UVA filter degradation, making it easier for formulators to achieve the broad-spectrum designation. In addition, Polycrylene S1 enhances water resistance, making it suitable for use in athletic sunscreens and daily wear products to be used at the pool and at the beach. It also provides a pleasant skin feel and is suitable for use in sprays, lotions, creams, balms, and gels. Grant Industries Grant Industries launched Gransil SiW-066, an easy-to-formulate, process friendly micro-dispersion of silicone-in-water. An outer aqueous design on Gransil SiW-066 allows silicone elastomer to easily be added to the water-phase of formulations— no heat required. Gransil SiW-066 is suitable for cold processing where elegant products can be created with simple mixing. Applications include sun care, skin care, color cosmetics and body care. Use level 5-40%. Bayer MaterialScience Bayer MaterialScience’s Baycusan C 1000 is well suited to modern oil-in-water sunscreen formulations because it acts as a stabilizer in such systems. The film-forming agent can be used with or without emulsifiers. This helps prevent re-emulsification under the influence of water, and the products largely retain their protective effect. They also display high water resistance, a critical requirement for modern sunscreen formulations. This year, Bayer is focusing on formulations with a high sun protection factor (SPF), such as SPF 50 and higher. In these sunscreen formulations, the film-forming dispersion Baycusan C 1000 forms a flexible, non-occlusive film. It moves in accord with the skin and enables a naturally soft, non-sticky skin feel. The polyurethane dispersion can significantly increase the SPF in formulations containing Octocrylene, Ethylhexyl Triazone (both UV-B filters), bis-Ethylhexyloxyphenol Methoxyphenyl triazine (BEMT) or Benzophenone– 3 (broad band UV filters), although the dispersion itself does not contain any UV-absorbing groups, said Bayer MaterialScience. The preservative-free film-forming agent can be incorporated into common formulations without neutralization and without a high energy input, most effectively by using a hot/cold method in an industrial manufacturing process.
