Commentary SPRAYTechnology & Marketing Ava Caridad, Editor A message worth repeating The National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention has designated the Friday before Memorial Day as “Don’t Fry Day.” The Council’s goal is to encourage sun safety awareness by reminding everyone to protect their skin while enjoying the outdoors on Don’t Fry Day and every day. Skin can be safeguarded by the use of protective clothing, headgear and eyewear, and of course, sunscreen—the higher the SPF the better. When I read messages like this, I’m always painfully reminded of the time I went bike-riding along some ocean cliffs in Australia’s Northern Territory. So excited was I to be down there, I biked off with not one bit of sun protection. Australia makes no secret that it’s considered the skin cancer capital of the world, and I sizzled in the sun like a piece of bacon. Upon my return to my hotel (The Darwin Queen), native Aussies declared me “right stupid” and took me down to “the chemist” for some aloe vera. I’m aware that I’ve now doubled my chances of getting skin cancer from that one thoughtless incident, but sadly, my actions were based on a lifetime of mis-education and neglect. For instance, one summer my parents shipped me off to Daytona Beach to spend a month or two with my godparents, who had retired down there. Every day we would drive to the beach—correction, we would drive ON the beach—to spend no less than five hours were quite elderly and indulgent of me, and no match for my 10-year-old energy, speed and sheer determination not to be caught and slathered. Away I would run, shrieking, into the ocean or up the shoreline, and after a week, probably less, they just gave up and no longer tried to offer me what, in retrospect, was some very practical child care. These days, continuous spray sunscreen makes it so very much easier to apply sunscreen to children, even the squirmy and the defiant. They spray at 360° angles to get at backs of knees and other awkward spots. To further encourage kids to hold still, suncreens just for kids have become very popular, featuring swell scents, fun foams and favorite cartoon characters on the packaging. (see p. 20). Furthermore, we have so much more education on the subject and understanding of the importance of sun protection than we had in generations gone by. There are scores of legitimate, science-based websites offering advice, as well as school and camp initiatives that teach adults and children the facts about protecting themselves from solar damage. I believe I’m preaching to the choir on this one, as this is an issue Industry has been on top of for a long time, but it’s a common sense message worth repeating. Remember to Slip! Slop! Slap! and Wrap! when you’re outdoors: Slip on a shirt, slop on sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher, slap on a hat and wrap on sunglasses. I’d disembark from the car and my godmother would grab me before I could get away and try to apply sunscreen to my very pale skin. My godparents, bless them, Editor
