Spray Patterns BY AVA CARIDAD Editor 62 Spray May 2013 The Alliance for Consumer Education (ACE) partnered with the American Association of Poison Control Centers (AAPCC) and YMCA of Metropolitan Washington DC to host “Be a Superhero in Your Home” in recognition of National Inhalants & Poisons Awareness Week. On March 22, approximately 200 children converged on the YMCA Arlington to learn how to “Be a Superhero in Their Home.” The highlight of the event was a visit from Batman—a Poison Prevention Superhero! Arriving in his 1966 replica Batmobile, Batman met with the children—as well as ACE’s mascot Ace Clean (left)—to give poison prevention advice, such as asking an adult before consuming something, not putting products that may harm you into your body, and reading directions and labels to ensure products are being used in the correct way. On March 13, at the Cosmetic Industry Buyers & Suppliers Association (CIBS) monthly networking luncheon held at The Manhattan Club at Rosie O’Grady’s, in New York, NY, 25 new members took center stage as they were inducted into the organization. New inductees for 2013 are (pictured below with the group’s officers, but not listed in order): Salvatore Acerba (Schawk/ Anthem); Olivier Brigaud (Cultech Group); Debbie Cross (A.S.A.P Logistics Ltd.); Franco Diaz, Jr., (CCL Label Healthcare Solutions); David Dustin (Eve Pearl Cosmetics); Gregory Elder (Qosmedix); Martin Estrella (SGD): Ivan Iannetta (Cadence Packaging); Matthew Jacobson (JS McCarthy Printers); Jason Jones (Drug & Cosmetic Packaging); Kathrynn Kairawicz (Cosfibel); Chris Kao (UPG); Sheldon Reiter (Cultech Group); Frank Siegga (Astute Pack); Olivier Trevedic (Bormioli Rocco); Joseph Tuschong (Inoac Packaging); Frank Wasylyk (Atlantic Coast Creations); Meaghan Yockey (Yockey & Co.); Greg Hansen (Beyer Graphics); Kristin Coffey (ITW Graphics); Mark J. Egan (Colt’s Plastics); Walter Kresse (Berlin Packaging); Marcy Magnuson (Dieter Bakic Enterprises); Kodi Traver (SGD NA); Leslie Unger (Bufkor Corp.). With a new location, new honoree and new theme, The Beauty Bus Foundation, a non-profit organization that delivers dignity, hope and respite to chronically or terminally people through beauty treatments and pampering products, will host its 4th annual Beauty Drive fundraising event on May 5. Honoring Chief Creative Officer and Founder of NYX Cosmetics, Toni K., the Beauty Bus Foundation will recognize her commitment with the help of sponsors including Bosley Professional Strength, JAFRA Cosmetics, Orly, Dorsey & Whitney, InStyler Professional and Qosmedix. Last year, over 300 attendees and sponsors raised nearly $100,000 that helped the organization provide over 1,200 services and deliver over 3500 Bags of Beauty to chronically or terminally ill men, women, children and their caregivers. Nearly 70% of the UK population buy or use aerosols and, of those who do buy them, the good news is that 73% are recycling. These were just some of the results revealed in a recent GFK NOP survey carried out for the British Aerosol Manufacturers’ Association (BAMA). The survey also reveals that women buy slightly more aerosols (53%) than men (47%) and that while women are marginally better at recycling overall, it is the 35–54 age group who are the most enthusiastic recyclers, comprising nearly 40% of those aerosol buyers or users who recycle empty aerosols. The research found that consumers recycle from all parts of the home: the bathroom (91%), the bedroom (70%) and kitchen (78%). However, when consumers move out into the garage, around half forget to recycle empty aerosols (51%). Unsurprisingly, the most recycled products are personal care aerosols, reflecting this as the largest sector of the industry. Asked about the number of empty aerosols they recycled, half the respondents said they recycled between 1–5 products every three months. However, there is still room for improvement as 80% of those buying or using aerosols, and who don’t recycle, said they simply didn’t know how. “It’s very rewarding to see that our efforts, by creating campaigns, via retailers, the media, consumers and local authorities, are working,” said Dr. John Morris, BAMA’s Chief Executive. “We have been able to create a momentum for recycling aerosols. Almost 30,000 tonnes of reclaimable metal are used in aerosols sold in the UK each year. This means empty aerosol recycling makes a valuable contribution to meeting local authorities’ required reduction in landfill.” SPRAY
