Chris McCarthy, Manager, Social
Media & Member Engagement,
American Chemical Society, presented
Improving Your Social Chemistry
Science Communication on Facebook,
Twitter & Other Online Platforms.
Scientists are using assorted social
Walter-Terrinonni
media platforms to communicate with various audiences.
Science communication usually refers to sharing scientific
information and concepts with non-experts via outreach
events, science museums or exhibitions, science journalism
and by informing policymakers. Scientists can use social
media for science communication if
they understand the platforms, know
the audience, plan goals and shape the
message. McCarthy advised following
like-minded scientists and science
communicators, people whose work
you admire, and those in the desired
audience(s). Follow hashtags such as
#SciComm or #RealTimeChem and
join the conversation.
On Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn,
several studies have shown that
McCarthy
posts with images are more likely to draw engagement; ask
yourself if there’s a compelling image or video that can accompany
your posts. Keep the message positive and avoid
certain political statements, especially partisan comments or
endorsements. Moderation may be necessary with a group
or in a comment section and consider a policy to keep your
group free from personal attacks. Ultimately, social media can
lower the barrier for communication with wider audiences.
Gene Sanders of WEtrain Consulting presented Aerosols:

the regulations issued by
various regulatory organizations
say is hazardous is hazardous.
For instance, CPSC (16CFR)
decides what is hazardous in the
home; OSHA (29CFR) decides
what is hazardous to work with;
EPA (40CFR) decides what is
hazardous as waste; and DOT
(49CFR) decides what is hazardous
for transport. Regarding
transport, outside the U.S.,
“hazardous materials” = “dangerous
Sanders
goods” and some materials can be classified as both
hazardous and non-hazardous. It is important to navigate
the complexities. Spray
