Another Mintel observation within this trend of anti-pollution is many brands repositioning their messaging to appeal to consumers living or working in urban environments. The Simple brand from Unilever is a great example of this with marketing tailored to address the specific needs of “city skin”— sensitivity, dryness, redness, dirt and pollution. The idea of detoxifying the skin leads to new treatment opportunities and, again, new product formats. Shu Uemura’s POREraser range of mousse skin primers brings together powerful skin protecting and perfecting ingredients with an ultra-lightweight aerosol mousse formulation. Clayspray has innovated by emulsifying pure clay into an aerosol facial mist to help purify skin and remove pollutants. Seasonality We love to talk about the weather, but consumers are also noticing that their hair and skin reacts to changes in temperature and humidity throughout the year and they are looking for different products to address specific needs. This desire for more specialty-type products creates a strong potential for new products and new sub-categories. Impacts of extreme weather and climate change also dictate new product formats and packaging types. Water shortages in California and São Paolo, Brazil, for example, can lead to an uptick in “waterless” product types such as dry shampoos and cleansing wipes. Taking a quick look at Mintel consumer research around the globe, we see that 80% of German consumers think that their skin changes throughout the year and 48% of women in China use different facial skincare products from different brands, depending on their skin’s needs during the year. Navigating the seasons for skincare focuses not just on the extremes of winter and summer but also addresses the transitional seasons where skin can become its most unbalanced and problematic. Summer weather tends to be hotter and have higher levels of humidity, leading to oilier skin and blemishes. The prevalence of air conditioning in the West can dehydrate skin, as can swimming in pools and the ocean. Exposure to UV is also something to consider as days become longer and consumers spend more time outside. Increased sun time can lead to the development of dark spots and freckles. Lighter textures, oil-free formulations and products that absorb quickly into the skin are all attributes consumers gravitate towards in the warmer months. Foaming and misted products have really come into their own with the concept of seasonality allowing for powerful skincare in a convenient format. H2O+ offers a foaming facial toner that is light as air and melts into the skin. La Roche-Posay’s aerosol Serozinc face mist is ideal for summer skin, helping to control oil and mattefying the skin. Winter weather carries with it its own set of challenges for skin. Moving from cold exteriors to dry, sometimes overheated, interiors can dehydrate skin, making it feel tight and itchy. Exposure to freezing winds can also create rough irritated skin. Winter skin, s well as lips and hands, crave gentle formulations with lots of moisture. Traditionally, ultra-moisturizing products would be rich, heavy creams and lotions but advances in ingredient technology now allow for deep moisture in a much lighter, more comfortable format. Essences are a new formulation type that has emerged from South Korea. These products tend to be waterbased, light in texture but pack a punch of powerful ingredients. Innisfree’s Jeju Sparkling Essence is one such product that is light on the skin but promises to deliver moisture deep into the skin from an aerosol package. L’Occitane has created a foaming mousse cleanser that removes makeup and impurities without stripping skin. The texture of the foam is rich and moisturizing. Hair faces its own set of challenges from changing seasons. Summer humidity, UV and chlorine can wreak havoc on hairstyles as can the cold, dry weather of winter. Static and ever-present “hat head” in the winter can leave hair looking dry, dull and frizzy. Alterna Anti-Static Spray is a good example of a winter-specific hair care product that promises to neutralize static smoothing and revitalizing hair, while Living Proof’s Instant Protection Styling Spray promises 24- hour protection from summer’s UV rays. Analysis on new product launches within Mintel’s Global New Products Database shows that the use of aerosols within the skincare category is on the rise. Most prevalent within sun care, aerosols have shown recent growth in both facial skincare as well as body care. SPRAY
