February 2014 Spray 31 The British Aerosol Manufacturers’ Association (BAMA) announced the winners of the 2013 BAMA Awards at the BAMA Awards Dinner in October, following the annual BAMA Forum. Unilever UK was the winner in two out of the four categories— Innovation and Aerosol of the Year. Reabrook Ltd was crowned winner in the Sustainability category for its Energy Savings Project and Norman Clark, Global Aerosol Technical Manager at Reckitt Benckiser, received the Outstanding Contribution award.   Aerosol of the Year Unilever’s Compressed Aerosols Launched in February 2013, Unilever’s range of compact aerosols within the Sure, Dove and Vaseline brand ranges created 16 new products. The launch of its Compressed Aerosols range is leading the way in sustainability with 50% less propellant gas, 25% less aluminum per can, 35% reduction in transport emissions and 53% more products on a pallet, thereby lowering the carbon footprint by 25% on average. Sustainability Awards Winner Reabrook Ltd Reabrook’s Energy & Environmental Committee focused on overall environmental impact, making three major investments which resulted in 26% reduction in both electricity and fuel oil usage. The improvements included a new compressor, replacement lighting (including presence detectors) and a new steam generator replacing a boiler.   Innovation Awards Winner Unilever’s Rexona / Sure for Men Unilever launched the new Rexona /Sure for Men aerosol in summer 2013. It offered an enhanced formulation with MotionSense, new fragrances, new design hardware designed by Pininfarina, upgraded pack graphics and new brand positioning. Other companies involved in the product’s development were Plastek (actuator development along with BAMA member Lindal) and DCA for actuator engineering development. Outstanding Contribution Award Norman Clark, Reckitt Benckiser Norman Clark, Global Aerosol Technical Manager at Reckitt Benckiser, has worked with BAMA Compressed Aerosols from Unilever won the Aerosol of the Year Award. for over twenty years, representing both his former employer, Unilever UK, and his current employer. During that time, he has been an active member of the Technical Group, Chaired the Regulatory Affairs Committee, has held both the Vice Chair and Chairman posts of the Executive Committee and represented the Association as Chairman of the European Aerosol Federation (FEA) Packaging & Contents Committee. Clark is currently involved with the revision of the BAMA Standard. Commenting on the Awards overall, Dr. John Morris, Chief Executive of BAMA, said, “The UK aerosol industry is a real success story. This is reflected in the number and quality of entries.” “We saw everything,” he continued, “from examples of corporate social responsibility to environmental sustainability; tangible evidence of innovation in products, packaging and manufacturing techniques; and examples of sound strategic thinking in all aspects of these businesses from processes through to marketing.
