As the personal care industry continues
moving toward more natural products, Eyeris
provides customers with the opportunity for
the packaging to reflect this shift, said Ball. Detailed
life-like imagery, such as leaves, flowers
and landscapes, can be printed on cans, allowing
brands to stand out in today’s competitive
retail market.
“We know the market is clamoring for inventive
solutions to create standout packaging,”
said Jason Galley, Director of Global Innovation
& Business Development for Ball Aerosol
Packaging.
“There is such buzz in the industry for digital
printing, and Eyeris provides an alternative to
achieve similar results on aerosol cans. This
unique technology can transform our customers’
ability to harness the increasing power of
imagery and story-telling, truly representing the
next generation of aluminum aerosol printing.”
Eyeris is available in Europe, North America
and India.
Ball Corp. also unveiled a new technique
to give aluminum cans of all sizes a metallic
shine and premium look. The reflective effect
is not achieved through hot stamping, but
rather rich and bright metallic ink applied
with a new technology. This technique costs
far less than hot stamping, Ball noted.
Inks for aerosols
“Some of the key decorating trends we’re seeing now include the
usage of sensory coatings and anti-counterfeiting technologies,”
noted Tony Renzi, VP of Product Management Liquid Inks, North
American Inks, Sun Chemical, Parsippany, NJ.
“There is also a desire to find new ways to reduce costs and meet
the sustainability goals of printers. Traditionally, spray containers
and packaging in general have been developed
and used for purely functional purposes,
including the transport, storage and protection
of everyday goods. Today, we live in a different
world where packaging facilitates communication,
advertising, branding, security and
drives sales, in addition to all of its functional
purposes.”
Inks and coatings can enhance a consumer’s
involvement with the spray containers,
explained Renzi. Spray containers can be
enhanced by adding a variety of special effects
coatings, such as glitter, pearl or metallic coatings
combined with contrasting matte and gloss
effects that can provide visual contrast, stimulation
and differentiation.
Brand owners are also utilizing anti-counterfeiting
inks and coatings to minimize
the threat of counterfeiting. Sun Chemical
supplies a form of taggant that is only visible
or detectible through more sophisticated
hand-held readers and is manufactured as
part of the ink. According to the company,
this taggant solution can play an important
role in identifying a fake and can help secure and authenticate
brand packaging.
Sun Chemical’s SunAltec series is a range of inks for metal
decorating on monobloc aerosol cans. The inks offer enhanced
performance and quality, high productivity and strong chemical
resistance properties, according to Renzi. Part of the SunAltec
product family includes the MB Plus Series, an ink series that
has been specifically designed for the application on monobloc
aerosols. The series uses an alkyd-based ink system that has been
modified for optimum performance on new generation product
lines utilizing today’s basecoat technology.

Unique design helps deter counterfeiting
Turkey-based Sora Creations launched the Queens Met line of Perfumed
Deodorant Body Sprays. The 200mL aerosol sprays are named
after gems and include Agate, Ametist, Berly, Diamond, Galaxy, Jade, Ruby
and Sapphire. The exclusive design of the El Fantastico aluminum cans,
made by Turkey-based Aryum, have a gilded slope that make the cans
appear as if they are resting in a gold enclosure—but the cans are indeed
only one piece. This unique shape helps prevent counterfeiting. Other
embellishments include gold tones for a regal look, deep and rich colors
to distinguish the different fragrances and an intricate glossy, gold-plated
cap with a crown-like design. The can also features 360°oriented printed
deformation and deep shaping down to 90mm from the can top.
Queen Met’s purple hued Ametist earned a 2018 World Aluminum
Aerosol Can Award nomination from AEROBAL. The body sprays are sold
in Turkey, North Africa and the Middle East.
