equipment were developed for
aerosol products.
In 1998, full scale testing of
un-cartoned aerosol products
indicated that they were
more hazardous than aerosol
products in cartons. In 2008,
plastic aerosol products were
first tested with shave gel tests
and a new category and protection
plan was developed for
Plastic Aerosol 1.
In 2012, cooking spray
products were re-evaluated in
full scale testing and a new
category and protection plan
was developed for cooking
spray products.
The Plastic Aerosol Research
Group (PARG) then
developed a new category
of aerosol products, Plastic
Aerosol 3, tested with full scale
fire tests, and added to NFPA
30B and the latest editions of
the IFC. Several formulations
with flammable base product
and flammable propellant
were tested in single can tests and two-carton tests. Tests showed
the size of the fire increases with flammable propellant increase.
PARG is working to continue to develop Plastic Aerosol 2. New
formulations are being proposed to develop a plan for ceiling-only
protection. Formulas are being evaluated using similar product
data from fire tests on products in plastic containers but nonpressurized.
Reduced array testing for each variant is planned to
verify expected results. If all goes as planned, a new category, Plastic
Aerosol 2, will be added to NFPA 30B and IFC.
Haley Diamond, Acting Executive Director
of the Alliance for Consumer Education (ACE),
presented ACE & Aerosols: An ACE Update. The
challenges ACE currently faces include inhalant
abuse, product misuse, lack of recycling understanding
and consumer perceptions. Some examples
of product misuse are huffing, KD (spraying
insect spray on tobacco, etc., before smoking it)
and the Deodorant Challenge. The Deodorant
Challenge, which has taken off among teens and
preteens in the U.S and UK, involves holding a can of aerosol
deodorant just above the skin and spraying for as long as possible,
resulting in chemical burns.
ACE’s mission is to educate consumers and improve lives
through its programs: Consumer Care, Health & Wellbeing
and Inhalant Abuse Prevention. The ACE Healthy Starts at Home
campaign was set to launch in January 2019, with Elevating Air
Care Products and Antimicrobials following in the winter and
spring.
