Personal care ingredients
from NYSCC Suppliers’ Day
The 39th annual New York Society
Veronica MacDonald Ditko
of Cosmetic Chemists (NYSCC)
Suppliers’ Day hailed 10% more
visitors than last year, topping nearly 9,500
registrants from 58 countries, according
to show organizers. The event, held at the
Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New
York City in May, showcased about 500
personal care ingredient and raw material
suppliers in sold-out booths. The show
reflected many trends occurring in the
personal care industry, such as the demand
for more natural, sustainably-derived and
sensorial ingredients.
NYSCC’s 2019 Suppliers’ Day is scheduled
for May 7–8, 2019 at the Javits Center.
Opening announcements at the 39th annual NYSCC
Suppliers’ Day, which began on May 15.
Here’s a look at a number of ingredients
offered at this year’s Suppliers’ Day.
Alban Muller
Alban Muller’s Amigel is a gelling agent
derived from a natural polysaccharide.
Chickory root is at the heart of Alban
Muller’s Glucohyami, which boosts hylaronic
acid in the skin. Milk thistle extract
acts as an ester in Alban Muller’s Lipolami,
which can also be used to replace silicones
in hair products.
Ashland
Ashland offered a platform of biofunctionals
that are sustainably and ethically sourced
and traceable from countries such as Peru
and Colombia. Ingredients include Serenityl
for detoxifying skin care products derived
from Marsdenia Condurango (condurango)
bark and the Blumilight blue-light fighting
skin care extract from the Theobroma Cacao
(cocoa) seed.
For hair products, Ashland has a polymer,
Advantage LCA, which is dissolvable
in propellant gas, making it a suitable
material for aerosol hair styling products.
Meanwhile, Ashland’s Gantrez
meets the needs for a light and natural
feeling hair styler.
Honing in on the iridescent trend,
Ashland offers pearlescent emulsifiers
such as the Cerasynt IP ester and
Cerasynt PA ester derived from palm oil
and designed for hand and body washes
and shampoos.
Cargill
Non-GMO soy lecithin is the basis of Cargill’s
Emultop Velvet IP emulsifier to create
a velvety skin feel. Carrageenan extract is
the basis of Cargill’s Satiagel line to
form gels for hair and skin care.
Covestro
Covestro offers a biodegradable filmformer
line called Baycusan Eco that
can be combined with mineral-based
sunscreens. It contains 50% biomass
made from renewable raw materials,
company executives said.
Croda
Croda developed a transparent zinc
and titanium oxide sunscreen, Solaveil
CTP-7. This powder offers enhanced
UVB protection and is suitable for sun care,
skin care and color cosmetics.
Dow Chemical
Dow Chemical promoted Ganex, a
multifunctional skin care polymer that
transforms from liquid into a soft powdery
finish on the skin. It can also help to retain
UV filters and pigments on the skin.
Recent studies have shown the harmful
effect of some sunscreens on coral reefs.
Dow has also moved to provide an oxybenzone
sunscreen alternative with Soltex INO
polymer technology, which helps create
transparent, smooth and non-whitening
sunscreens by helping to disperse TiO2 and
ZnO in formulations.
Multifunctional formulations were also
touted by Dow such as with the Quick Fix
Protect Spray, a hair care formula that provides
both sun protection and conditioning
with the help of silicones.
DuPont
Sugar beet extract comprises DuPont’s Genecare
OSMS line of ingredients designed to
help the skin retain moisture and keep the
hair more conditioned.
Eastman
Eastman can now offer Retinal A in a spray
formulation to create a spray face mask for
nighttime use. Other innovations include
AQ38, a water-resistant polymer dispersed
in the water phase of sunscreen formulations,
and AQ48, a non-greasy polymer also
dispersed in the water phase (not oil phase)
to help with humidity resistance in hair care
and styling products.
Gattefossé
Gattefossé developed EnergiNius to protect
the skin against not just blue light, but also
red and green light emitted from electronic
devices. The main ingredient is Indian ginseng,
grown on an organic farm in Oregon.
EnergiNius also helps to revive the skin’s
healthy glow.
Imerys
Imerys offers ImerCare minerals for cosmetics
such as kaolin for face masks, perlite
for exfoliators and diatomaceous earth for
matte and dry touch formula effects.
Lipotec
Lipotec created Lumicease blue ingredient
to combat the blue light of electronics with
a fermented extract of a radiation-resistant
microorganism. It combats photo-aging and
repairs the skin.
Lipotec considers the probiotic health of
the skin with Fensebiome Peptide, a skin
care additive created for raw, dehydrated
and over reactive urban skin.
Lubrizol
Lubrizol’s Carbopol Clear Polymer for
hair styling products is processed in such a
way that it uses 40% less energy and water,
thus creating a more sustainable product
line and less environmental impact,
Lubrizol said.
