Commentary
This month, Commentary is provided by guest editorialist Dennis Smith,
President of the Eastern Aerosol Association (EAA).
It’s never too late to learn…
I learned a valuable lesson the other day from my 11-year-old granddaughter: It’s
never too late to learn. Her imagination and hunger for knowledge has inspired
me to keep an open mind.
Welcome to the Eastern Aerosol Association...I mean, welcome to the Aerosol
Industry. Continuous learning is a way of life in our industry. OK, here is my take
on Continuous Improvement.
Several times a year, our board gets together to discuss our program for the next
meeting. This past board meeting was like any other…except we have three new
board members and one volunteer set to become a board member at our next meeting.
We just came off an awesome Aerosol 101 course in April. How do we back up
this great meeting next year?
During our discussion, a new board member asked the question, “If our Aerosol
101 is so popular, why don’t we have one every year?”
I was about to answer him with my years of experience and great wisdom until
I realized he had stumped me. I refer back to my opening, “It’s never too late to
learn.” We know that our last four Aerosol 101 meetings had over 90% of attendees
who had never been to 101! We also know that most regional meetings are attended
by people in that region.
Our new program director and committee members are now taking us down a
new path for EAA’s April 2019 meeting. Keep checking our website www.easternaerosol.
com, as well as @eastaerosol on Twitter and LinkedIn for announcements in the
Fall. This proactive communication will be a first for us!

If you seek knowledge of aerosol products, all of
our regional and national associations will be able
to quench that thirst. Go to https://www.spraytm.
com/industry-links for links to all associations.
The EAA, I mean all regionals, are committed
to promoting and providing education about the
aerosol package. We are very proud of our baseball
promotion that started almost 15 years ago and
has reached over 9 million fans (with the help of
the Southern Aerosol Technical Association and
the Midwest Aerosol Association). That’s 9 million
people that know you can “Recycle your Empty
Aerosols!” There is nothing better than seeing kids
come up to the aerosol can mascots with big smiles,
wanting their pictures taken with them.
Aerosol product education only comes from
experienced colleagues speaking about the best way
to formulate, package and fill aerosol products.
Why volunteer this valuable information? Every successful
package in the market is a success for all suppliers, fillers, marketers and the
industry as a whole. Let’s keep teaching and learning every day. Why not consider
being a volunteer or speaking at an aerosol meeting?
I look forward to seeing everyone at the EAA summer Golf Outing & Wine
Education event on Aug. 2. Have a great summer and don’t forget to use plenty of
aerosol sunscreen. I just learned that from my recent visit to the dermatologist!
