Spray November 2015

Industry News November 2015 Spray 43 Responding to a shareholder who had criticized Procter & Gamble Co.’s (P&G) management for flip-flopping on its strategy over the years, P&G CEO A.G. Lafley acknowledged responsibility for the consumer-products company’s weak performance and promised better results in the coming years under the leadership of his successor. Lafley ceded CEO responsibilities to David Taylor on Nov. 1, while staying on as Executive Chairman. According to The Wall Street Journal, P&G has struggled to accelerate sales growth in an era of more frugal consumers since the 2008-2009 recession, and in its financial year that ended in June, the company’s performance was particularly weak. When Lafley previously ran P&G from 2000 to 2009, the company more than doubled in size and market value by acquiring brands including Gillette, Wella shampoos and Duracell batteries. Over the past year and a half, P&G has put in place plans to shed around 100 of its 165 brands, including Wella and Duracell, to focus its resources on growing core brands such as Pantene shampoo, Pampers diapers and Tide detergent. The company is also several years into a deep cost-cutting and restructuring plan. Johnson & Johnson Consumer Inc. announced the new Care to Recycle program, part of a nationwide educational campaign and contest in collaboration with Scholastic to teach kids about the importance of recycling throughout the house. The campaign, which is geared toward children in grades 1-3, includes several lesson plans for teachers—featuring English, Language, Arts, Math and Science topics—as well as take-home student activities for parents. The contest, PETE’s Bathroom Bin Challenge, asks students to write a short essay accompanied by a poster that shares why recycling personal care products is important and how they will encourage their family to recycle more of these products. A total of 10 grand prize winners will be selected to receive prizes. Quadpack was honored with the Luxury Cosmetic Pack Award for its work with Little Butterfly London’s new luxury baby skin care range at the 2015 Luxury Packaging Awards in London, England on September 16. The products feature wooden caps made by Quadpack’s Technotraf Wood Packaging division.
