Industry News Colorado-based can supplier Ball Corp. opened an aluminum aerosol can plant in Ahmedabad, India, citing the need to meet increasing demand in the region. The new plant is part of the company’s Drive for 10 initiative, aimed at increasing its presence in new geographic regions. The initial investment of 1.2 billion Rupees ($18.5 million) will provide for a capacity of 50 million aerosol cans, with additional investments planned over the next five to ten years to bring the capacity up to 300 million cans per year. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a new smog limit on October 1, reducing the standard for ground-level ozone to 70 parts per billion (ppb). The new standard, which replaces the previous limit of 75 ppb set in 2008 by the George W. Bush administration, was the weakest limit under consideration by the agency. Public health advocates and environmentalists, among others, had endorsed a more stringent 60 ppb standard and announced their intentions to challenge the new standard in court. Industry groups, on the other hand, fear that lowering the standard any further will stifle business and curb economic growth. California has until 2037—12 years longer than the rest of the nation—to adhere to the new standard. The timing of the new limit comes after environmental groups sued the EPA in 2013 over delays in reducing the ozone standard. For more information, see p. 8. The assessments focused on areas such as management commitment and policies related to customer focus, in-house quality standards and final inspection and delivery. Target Corp. expanded the list of chemicals it wants suppliers to remove from the products sold in the Minneapolis, MN-based discount retailer’s stores. The list, called the Product Sustainability Index, includes almost 600 substances on Health Canada’s list of prohibited cosmetic ingredients, as well as triclosan, the use of which was banned from cosmetic products in Minnesota last year. While Target is not prohibiting the ingredients outright, the move is expected to incentivize consumer products manufacturers to eliminate the controversial substances. Walmart made a similar announcement in 2009, requiring manufacturers to phase out 10 undisclosed substances from products. Plastipak Packaging (formerly APPE) marked its recent expansion into the Nordic countries by exhibiting at Scanpack 2015, October 20–23 in Gothenburg, Sweden. The move complements the rigid plastic packaging manufacturer’s operations in North and South America, as well as its recent expansion into China, according to the company. Ashland Specialty Ingredients presented the merits of Escalol S UV filter as an important ingredient in efficient broadspectrum sun care products at the Florida Society of Cosemtic Chemists meeting in Lake Buena Vista, FL in September.
