Getting the message out... BAMA publishes new guide and poster series The successes and growth of the British aerosol industry, including its sustainability record, are now documented in a new publication from the British Aerosol Manufacturers’ Association (BAMA). The newly published Aerosols in Figures will act as an important new factual journal noting key facts and data about the industry, according to BAMA. It includes a chart showing the UK sector’s filling figures covering every year since 1965, providing an interesting record not only of a changing industry, but of changing fashions and habits among the population. The publication carries a Foreword by the renowned environmental campaigner and Founder/Director of Forum for the Future, Jonathon Porritt. “The British aerosol sector has a history of responding proactively and positively to scientific knowledge about environmental issues,” commented Porritt. “For over 50 years, this has been driven by its trade association, BAMA. As Director of Friends of the Earth in the mid-1980s, I had the privilege of leading the campaign in the UK to eliminate the use of CFCs in aerosols. In that capacity, I enjoyed a robust, but always constructive, engagement with BAMA. We were delighted when BAMA enforced a voluntary ban on CFCs in 1989. “Twenty-five years on, aerosols have a number of sustainability benefits: they are generally made of high quality, recyclable metal; they avoid any excessive use of preservatives, as they keep products clean and hygienic; they avoid waste and spills; and the latest developments in compression and reduced package sizes are laudable. In addition, BAMA has played a very positive role in promoting recycling, both at the curbside and at council recycling centers, as the figures in this booklet show. It’s worth reminding people that the aerosol industry in the UK is also a manufacturing success story, with significant exports which continue to make a strong contribution to the UK economy,” concluded Porritt. Aerosols in Figures is free and is available to download at www.bama.co.uk. To request a printed copy, email BAMAadmin@bama.co.uk. Plaster the walls with free safety posters… BAMA has also launched a new set of six warehouse posters titled Working Safely with Aerosols. The free posters highlight safety points to consider when working in a factory or warehouse where aerosols are stored and handled. Each poster has clear and concise instructions, giving a list of nine essential safety checks. The guidance covers use of forklift trucks when loading pallets of aerosols or moving vehicles near aerosols, advice on regularly checking for signs of damaged product and other essential safety guidance on flammability and stacking of products.
