Global polypropylene demand fuels construction Worldwide polypropylene capacity has increased 5.2% annual since 2003, according to research from GlobalData, reaching 65 million tons per year in 2013. That annual rate of increase is expected to jump to 5.8% through 2018, led by Russia and China, who together will account for 45% of polypropylene produced over the span. Demand is especially on the rise in China, which is adding 7.48 million tons each year, 97.6% of which from newly-built facilities. Construction of new facilities is also behind increases in the capacities of Russia, Venezuela and India. German plastics remain steady Facing fierce competition from within Europe, German plastic packaging output rose slightly in 2013, up 100,000 tons to 4.3 million, an increase of 2.4% over 2012, led mostly by 1.7 million tons of packaging films produced. Bottles rose 2.1% to 634,000 tons, while cups/cans increased 8.8% to 643,000 tons, according to IK Industrievereinigung Kunststoffverpackungen e.V, the German Association of Plastic Packaging.
