Spray May 2015

Take Cover… 16 Spray May 2015 Each year, 20,000 people in Tanzania fight the consequences of a congenital pigmentation disorder. Those affected have light-colored skin, hair and eyes, making them more susceptible to sunburn and putting them at increased risk of skin cancer. One in every 2,500 inhabitants has albinism in the equatorial East African country and their average life expectancy is 30 years. Located at the foot of Kilimanjaro, the Regional Dermatology Training Centre (RDTC) has produced a sunscreen with SPF 30 protection— Kilimanjaro Suncare—and has distributed it free of charge to 2,000 people suffering from albinism in North Tanzania. Since 2013, BASF has provided ingredients and expertise for further expansion of production. However, an even better way to protect those affected by the sun is sought. In addition to a higher sun protection factor (SPF 50), the new sunscreen aims to have high absorption of UVA rays (the current version doesn’t) and long-lasting protection. More than 90% of all sunscreens available in Europe are oil-in-water emulsions, which are easy to apply, are easily absorbed and comfortable on the skin; however, they cannot withstand the hot African sun and are washed away through sweating. A BASF team of sunscreen experts is working to develop a waterin oil emulsion together with representatives of RDTC. It won’t be absorbed as quickly as oil-in-water emulsions but will offer long lasting protection, according to BASF. format. They are paraben- and PABA-free and water resistant for up to 80 minutes. The continuous spray products are available in three sizes, including a mini travel size, that utilize a valve from Coster.
