Spray Patterns AVA CARIDAD Editorial Director Precision Global, global manufacturer of valves, actuators and other dispensing solutions serving a variety of end markets, announced that its P5 Pump for plastic bottles received an award in innovation and process from the Thai Aerosol Association at its award ceremony held in December at the Bangkok International Trade & Exhibition Centre. In August, Precision Global was also the recipient of SC Johnson’s 2015 Quality Excellence Supplier Award. Following the detection of the Aedes aegypti mosquito-borne Zika virus in April, sales of mosquito repellent in Brazil rose by one-third last year, according to consumer research firm Nielsen, doubling revenue for the sector to $55.7 million. Sales have risen even more sharply since Brazilian authorities in November flagged a potential link between Zika and suspected cases of microcephaly, a condition marked by abnormally small head size in newborns that can result in developmental problems. Raia Drogasil, Brazil’s largest pharmacy chain, said repellent sales in December jumped seven-fold from a year earlier. Family-owned U.S. firm SC Johnson said in a statement that it was increasing its production of OFF! repellent in Brazil and was working with the government to ensure adequate supplies. Reckitt Benckiser said it was raising output of its Repelex brand to meet demand, particularly in northeastern Brazil and in the most populous state, Sao Paulo. In the U.S., industry insiders are preparing for a rise in sales once the mosquito season starts in the south in March or April, then rolls northwards as temperatures rise. 54 Spray March 2016 Beginning in April with the start of the new minor league baseball season, the Eastern Aerosol Association (EAA) is partnering with league champion Somerset Patriots in Bridgewater, NJ to promote the convenience and recyclability of aerosol products. EAA aerosol can mascots will participate in an on-field event and EAA messaging will be available in various spots around the stadium. Photo credit: http://bensbiz.mlblogs.com According to a recent report from Research & Markets, volume of sales of aerosol cans was 5.01 billion units in 2014 in North America and is estimated to reach 5.97 billion units by 2020, growing at 2.96% y-o-y. In terms of revenue, the value was $18.01 billion in 2014 and is estimated to grow at a rate of 3.36%, reaching $21.96 billion in 2020. Deodorants, hair sprays and hair mousse are the leading end markets of the metal aerosol cans in the region. The suppliers are under pressure for forward integration with R&D departments of the various aerosol can manufacturers. Over the past decade, customers and consumers have been more interested in sustainability and light-weighting is a feature of prime importance, according to the report. Companies are striving to manufacture light-weighted aerosol cans that can indirectly decrease raw material prices as a result of less usage. The latest aerosol product that isn’t really an aerosol product is the Bev-Can Body Spray Secret Flask, a container that looks just like a can of Lynx Deodorant Body Spray (AXE is called Lynx in the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and China). Designed to hold alcoholic beverages incognito at concerts, ballgames and restaurants, it’s made of food-grade aluminum and plastic, holds 7-8 ounces (205-235mL) of liquid and measures 5.5" x 2.25". “We use a thermal cylindrical printer to put images on the can,” explained Scott Przirembel, Developer & Marketer of Bev-Can. “It’s the same process used on actual cans of deodorant, ensuring that the flask will look completely realistic. “Besides being the first secret flask of its kind, we’ve taken the Bev-Can a step further,” he added. “Every production run will have a different look. The design and color scheme will change, much the way you have different brands of deodorant in retail stores.” The Bev-Can retails for $24.99 and, according to Przirembel, will most likely pay for itself in the first night of use.
