Spray March 2015

20 Spray March 2015 companies are pushing this technology in Europe. Three-piece welded tinplate aerosol cans can now be shaped, have painted side seams and bottoms, invisible seams or ribbing. Plastic aerosol container technology is motivated by cost savings. However, some position the containers as premium and the future of aerosols. Benefits include clarity, shaping and differentiation opportunities. Challenges include changes to filling lines, recycling, pressure and permeation resistance. Paul Winters, Communications Director, Biotechnology Industry Organization, presented The Future Role of Renewable Chemical Technologies in Sustainable Aerosol Products. Some expected benefits from renewable chemicals include biotechnology applications, microbial conversion and enzyme catalysis. This may result in aqueous environments, low temperatures, renewable resources and fewer byproducts through selectivity. Natural gas out-competes petroleum in the ethane, propane and butane markets, which creates opportunities for renewable chemicals in pentane and hexane markets. Natural gas is in a competitive position today for aerosol ingredients; however, biomass provides relative price stability. A sustainable supply chain is the best practice for the industry, said Winters. Sustainable feedstocks leverage continuous improvement to production agriculture, so it’s important to support consumer product branding and reputations for sustainability and engage customers and partners in sustainability certification. Jacob Park, Principal Sustainability Advisor, Forum for the Future U.S., presented The Future of Retailing: The Trends & Changes expected in Retailing Consumer Products. According to Park, “futures” is structured thinking about the future to improve decisions made today. It is integral to system innovation. Using futures strengthens long-term planning; helps define ambitious and achievable goals; stimulates product, service and system innovation; builds capacity to understand and engage with sustainability; provides a platform for alignment and collaboration; generates a compelling mandate for change and encourages structured exploration of the future to improve decision making today. Park explained Retail Horizons, which is a joint project with the Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA) and sponsored by Unilever and Target retailers. RILA members prioritize trends— such as water insecurity, shifting demographics, resource scarcity, geopolitical instability and global economic shifts—and use them to shape scenarios. Trends, scenarios and a toolkit are available at www.forumforthefuture.org/retailhorizons. Bill Auriemma, President, Diversified CPC International and Joe Bowen,VP, Sales & Marketing, Aeropres Corp. presented The Future of Aerosol Propellants. According to Bowen, natural propellants should be part of the future. Longterm supply and availability of the components needed to develop effective propellants will double by 2020 due to hydraulic fracturing (fracking). The cost of chemicals will go down and there will be more competitively-priced options for aerosol products. While we still face many challenges, the aerosol industry remains Saalwachter Winters Auriemma The CSPA honored its past Chairs with an oceanfront dinner attended by 19 former leaders of the organization and their spouses.  Park
