Spray March 2015

March 2015 Spray 19 100 Years The retail landscape may be changed forever by technology, Stephens commented, and not every company is positioned to survive or thrive in the new business reality. He noted that global e-commerce sales reached $1.2 trillion in 2013 and are growing 19% year-on-year (12% in the U.S). By 2025, 35% of retail transactions will occur online. Stephens predicted that immersive technology will create a virtual world where consumers will be able to travel around the globe to purchase products and tactile technology will enable online shoppers to “touch” products before they decide to buy them. He also predicted that technology will enable doctors and insurers to access wellness data from sensors imbedded in patients. Appliances that place orders when supplies run low may seem far-fetched, but the bottom line is that all this technology enables consumers to go direct to manufacturers and bypass traditional retail. “For the first time in history, the consumer is in control,” Stephens noted. “They don’t need to believe a marketer. They can shop whenever and wherever they want, so who needs a store?” Stephens believes that the store format will become the place where a customer can have an actual, physical connection with a brand and retailers must realize that they are selling an experience, not products. This will result in fewer, but better paying, retail jobs for people who can be brand ambassadors. Aerosol Products Division Program The theme of the Aerosol Products Division Program was Not Your Father’s Aerosols. Kevin Verville, Technical Director at Summit Packaging Systems, presented The Future of Aerosol Valves. According to Verville, valves will show continuous improvement and refinement of market and shelf presence. There will be continued expansion of pressurized packaging types and technologies, continued data driven research in atomization technologies and continued progress in commercial production of quality orifice size reduction, John Saalwachter, Director, Global Business Development & Marketing at Ball Corp., presented The Future of Aerosol Containers. Today’s aerosol can workhorses remain the aluminum and tinplate cans. Use of aluminum is farther along in Europe, and innovation will come from there. Developing regions, such as India, will also spur growth. One-piece impact extruded aluminum aerosol cans can be embossed, compressed, shaped or have graphics. Coil-to-can technology is new to the aerosol industry, having previously been used primarily in the beverage can industry. The aluminum is very thin, but some Lauderdale Officers Elected Representatives of CSPA’s 250 member companies re-elected Paul Siracusa, PhD, Executive VP-Global R&D, Church & Dwight Co., Inc., as Chairman. “Paul Siracusa has done a remarkable job leading CSPA in its 100th year,” said Chris Cathcart, CSPA President & CEO. “It has been a pleasure working with him to expand the association’s effectiveness as a representative of the household and institutional products industry and I look forward to continuing this partnership in 2015.” Also elected during the General Session were the 2015 board officers and members to the board for terms expiring in 2017.
