L’Oréal is determined to get more women and girls interested in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) through its For Women in Science fellowship program. The national program, which is accepting 2016 applicants at www. lorealusa.com/forwomeninscience, recognizes and rewards the contributions women make in STEM fields and identifies exceptional women researchers committed to serving as role models for younger generations. Five U.S.-based women will receive a fellowship grant of $60,000 each for their postdoctoral research through the program. Although women make up 47% of the total U.S. workforce, they are less represented in certain science and engineering occupations. Despite L’Oréal’s efforts, women remain underrepresented in the science and engineering workforce, although to a lesser degree than in the past, with the greatest disparities occurring in engineering, computer science and the physical sciences, according to the National Science Foundation.
