New Trends in the Japanese Pump Market Production increases to 585 million units T he Japanese Aerosol Industry Newspaper By Youmei Kobayashi Chairman Aerosol Industry Newspaper Co., Ltd. 20 Spray January 2015 recently reported that approximately 585 million pump dispensers were marketed in Japan in 2013, which shows an almost 5% increase over 2012. It seems the market has recovered from the 2011 Japanese earthquake disaster, with most production sites having been restored. Although competition in the pump market has intensified and energy-saving refill pouches are gradually increasing, this growth indicates market potential. In 2013, about 184 million 1–3cc dispenser pumps were sold. Sales of other kinds of pumps were as follows: approximately 115 million finger-pumps; approximately 122 million trigger-pumps; 82 million one-drop lotion pumps; 11.7 million high viscosity dispensing (HVD)/airless pumps; 42 million foam pumps and 24 million “other” types of pumps were marketed. Hygiene products, such as shampoo, hair conditioner and body soap mainly use 3cc dispenser pumps. Although sales of these pumps have decreased in recent years due to a gradual increase in refill pouches, they showed an increase in 2013. This was because 3cc pumps, used for siliconefree shampoos, sold well after marketers such as Japan Gateway launched wildly popular “non silicone-shampoos” in 2012. Some major cosmetics firms entered the market in 2013 promoting “natural ingredients only” and 1-cc dispenser pumps maintained steady sales, mainly for use with facial cleansing products. The 1–3cc dispenser showed an approximate 3% increase from 2012. The market was led by Yoshino Kogyosyo (57% of market share), followed by Mitani Valve (27%). Both have multinational production sites and import low-cost dispensers (mainly 3cc) from Thailand. In recent years, finger pumps—primarily used for skin care and medical care such as nasal/oral sprays—faced stiff competition from mini-trigger pumps. Top finger pump manufacturers were Mitani Valve (38% of market share), followed by Yoshino Kogyosyo (31%); Tsubakimoto Kogyo, importer of Calmar U.S. products (11%); Presco (6%); Aptar Pharma Japan (4%); Canyon; Life Platech; and Koikekagaku, importer of Coster products. Trigger pumps have grown steadily as mini-trigger pumps expanded into various applications. For instance, mini-triggers have been adapted from cosmetics to many new household products, such as deodorant sprays for clothes. The aesthetic and compact benefits of mini-triggers seem to fascinate many marketers and consumers. The market leader is Yoshino Kogyosyo (50%), followed by Canyon (27%); Mitani Valve (12%); Life Platech (6%); and Tsubakimoto Kogyo (3%). Sales of one-drop lotion pumps have declined in the past few years. However, 2013 sales were slightly higher than in 2012 because pump product sales, such Hygiene products, such as Kose’s Je l’aime brand shampoo and conditioner, mainly use 3cc dispenser pumps
