About ten years ago, Honeywell looked at impending regulations and formulated the Solstice Propellant for use in aerosols, solvents and refrigerants. According to Hulse, Honeywell’s Solstice Propellant is the only non-flammable, ultra-low Global Warming Potential (GWP) propellant available today. It has applications in dusters/cleaners, tire inflators/auto, hair spray, airbrush foundation, sunscreen, bug freezers, baby products and novelty/party streamers. Pharma/topical applications are in development. A large scale Solstice manufacturing facility in Louisiana is in full operation to meet demand. According to Hulse, 34,238,347 metric tons of CO2 have not been emitted into the atmosphere through the implementation of Solstice. Honeywell is currently engaged in plastic bottle compatibility studies with Solstice. A sample of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is placed on a microbalance. CO2 or Solstice Propellant is then introduced around the PET and the diffusion rate is calculated from the rate of weight gain. The Solstice Propellant diffuses very slowly through PET, said Hulse, and is uniquely compatible with, and enables, plastic bottle aerosol technology. Regulations are changing, warned Hulse, so be prepared. Mike Freeman, Division President-The Americas, WD-40, Co., presented Ways Innovation Can Grow Aerosol Sales & Usage. WD-40’s innovation culture in 1993 was to go from a 12oz can to a 16oz can and call it “Industrial Sized.” Innovation stayed there for ten years until WD-40 implemented some global strategic drivers: grow its multi-use products; grow the WD-40 Specialist brand; broaden product and revenue bases; attract, develop and retain outstanding “tribe members” and strive for operational excellence. Innovation is needed to grow brand equity, sales and profits in a healthy manner. It differentiates brands from competition Edward Piszynski, VP, Laboratory Services, Chicago Aerosol, LLC (right) won the Volunteer Recognition Award from the Aerosol Products Division. Piszynski has over 50 years of experience, primarily in consumer and industrial aerosol formulation, packaging and regulatory matters. He currently serves on the Aerosol Products Division Executive Board, multiple Aerosol Products Division committees, the Industrial & Automotive Division Executive Board and the Air Quality Committee. As a member of these committees, Piszynski has participated in the development of many regulatory issues on local, state and federal levels. He is currently Vice Chair of the Aerosol Products Division International Harmonization Committee and Vice Chair of the Labeling Assurance Research Group (LARG, LLC). He has chaired the Industrial & Automotive Division and has previously served as a member of CSPA’s Board of Directors. In addition, he is a member of the Consumer Products Committee of the American Coatings Association, the Society of Chemical Hazard Communication and the National Conference on Weights & Measures, as well as currently serving on the Board of Directors of the Midwest Aerosol Association (MAA). It also enhances “tribal activation” wherein employees are engaged, excited, do meaningful work and are rewarded. To innovate, start with the end user and uncover their unmet need or solve a pain point. Look for a new way to solve an old problem or identify a new problem. Ask the four questions: Is it real? Can we win? Is it worth it? Does it create positive lasting memories? Focus on innovation, develop a strong process that works for you and keep it simple. Finally, Freeman noted that e-commerce is growing exponentially. “I want to throw it out to the industry: how do we handle eorders from customers that want their aerosols shipped ‘the next day’”? Developing aerosols that can be shipped by air may well have to be the next step in innovation. Spray The CSPA awarded its Chairman’s Award to Robin Gentz, Director of Government Affairs for North America at the Clorox Co. Gentz was honored for her leadership in the consumer packaged goods industry and for her service on numerous CSPA committees, task forces and working groups for the past several decades. She has chaired or co-chaired the CSPA’s State Government Affairs Advisory Committee for 16 years. Pictured: Gentz (left) receives her award from CSPA Board Chair Bill Auriemma (Diversified CPC).
