Spray Patterns AVA CARIDAD Editorial Director Mary Kay has reached a company milestone, surpassing more than 1,200 patents for products, technologies and packaging designs in its global portfolio. More than 130 patents were awarded to the company in 2015, including utility patents for skin care technologies and product formulations. Two Purdue University Extension educators were honored by the American Cleaning Institute (ACI) for helping consumers learn the science behind cleaning products. The Indiana-based educators, Mary Ann Lienhart Cross and Annetta Jones, received the Clean & Healthy Families & Communities Award at the National Extension Association of Family & Consumer Sciences (NEAFCS) Annual Session. The award recognizes NEAFCS members for innovative educational programs and outreach efforts that help consumers understand the link between clean homes and good health. The educational program, “The Science Behind Cleaning,” was aimed at helping consumers gain knowledge and understanding of the safe use of cleaning products; cleaning product labels and the chemistry that makes cleaning products clean, sanitize and disinfect; the pros and cons of mixing your own cleaning products; and reliable resources on the science behind cleaning. The educators taught the program—based in part on materials developed by ACI—in eight counties to 270 participants, who in turn shared the information with 1,150 consumers. 54 Spray February 2016 Mifa AG has won the WorldStar Award for its spray bottles used in the M Plus Oeco Power range. The bottles are produced from 100% recycled PET and enable significant savings in crude oil. The spray bottles are also transparent without any discoloring, meaning the final color of the recycled PET material can vary significantly. The WorldStar is a packaging industry award organized every year by the World Packaging Organization (WPO). Judges from 17 different associations in the international packaging industry (all members of the WPO) evaluated over 290 packaging projects from 35 different countries. Awards were presented to the most outstanding products in the individual categories. The number of local authorities collecting empty aerosol containers for recycling has increased from 87% to 96% in the UK, according to new figures published by the Aluminum Packaging Recycling Organization (Alupro). The figures also show that over the past three years, the number of councils collecting aluminum foil for recycling increased from just 35% of councils in 2007 to 86%. Alupro provides local authorities with free materials to explain how to recycle empty aerosols, household foil and foil containers. “We have also worked with councils and their service providers to dispel some of the myths about these materials being ‘difficult’ to recycle,” explained Rick Hindley, Executive Director of Alupro. VariBlend announced that its customer, the UK’s Alfa Chemicals Ltd., has won the Society of Cosmetic Scientists’ (SCS) new Laura Marshall Memorial Award for the Year’s Most Innovative Cosmetic Product. The winning product was the Duo-Pump All-in-one Travel Kit from Alfa Chemicals. It contains a hydric and lipidic gel, stored separately and designed to work together to produce a range of different skin care products depending on the proportions of each used. Alfa’s platform allows consumers to choose the dosage of each gel and thus formulate custommade products on-the-go. The company chose the patented VariBlend dual dispensing system, which delivers the two phases independently. They can be instantly combined by massaging them together into a smooth and stable emulsion at the moment of application. The VariBlend system, which can also be fixed at specific settings, allows for precise delivery of two formulas of varying viscosities and flow rates. Simply rotating the dispenser head allows the consumer to select multiple formula strengths. As the dispenser head is rotated, it changes the position of the actuating disc, which interacts with the pump pistons. When actuated, this disc pushes each pump piston at different angles depending upon the selected mixing ratio.
