Guardian installed the Hi-Speed SST checkweigher to detect and reject under- and overfilled aerosol cans and improve yields. February 2016 Spray 35 “This checkweigher was so easy to install, we were able to do it ourselves,” noted Schreiber. Guardian uses the checkweigher on a line that produces both open-top and bag-on-valve (BOV) aerosols. The line manufactures 85 unique SKUs, filling round cans in several sizes from 38mm by 85mm to 65mm by 260mm, which weigh 45 to 550g. “We handle a wide variety of products on this line, so fast and accurate product changeovers are essential. The fill weight is changed on the control panel,” said Schreiber. “Changes to the height and diameter of the can require mechanical adjustments, which only take about ten minutes on this checkweigher, with no change parts or tools needed.” The SST checkweigher can handle up to 350 cans per minute. “Our production rate is very easy for this checkweigher. It’s not even breaking a sweat,” said Schreiber. “We like that it has the capability to grow with us.” Achieving an accuracy of +/- 0.5 to 2 g, the SST checkweigher is integrated with a downstream reject device that automatically removes off-weight packages from the production line. “The primary reason we installed this checkweigher was to eliminate under- and overweight cans and to document fill weights on the Certificates of Performance that we give to our customers,” said Schreiber. “This checkweigher also helps us improve our yields. If we’re running 550g cans and putting in a little extra every time, that cuts into our profit margin. On top of that, every can that gets rejected for being off-weight is lost product, and that waste costs money. The checkweigher helps us calibrate the filler, which reduces rejects and product giveaway.” Guardian’s SST checkweigher features Hi-Speed’s XE controller, which includes a 100-product memory and 5.7" color touchscreen user interface that is password protected. The dashboard layout provides at-a-glance monitoring of the production process. “This equipment is intuitive. It’s very easy to train our people to use,” said Schreiber. “The graphical display helps operators know what’s happening. During production, it alerts us to issues on the line, which allows us to take corrective action quickly.” In addition to manufacturing Guardian-branded pepper sprays, Guardian Protective Devices provides contract packaging services to companies that offer other mission-critical products such as mini fire extinguishers and gun oil in aerosol cans. Focused on innovation as well as high quality production, they are currently looking to explore opportunities to co-develop new aerosol products for new customers. “We make serious equipment for professionals, and civilians receive the same high standards. Our products have to do what we say they’re going to do,” said Schreiber. “We’re very happy with our choice of the SST checkweigher. It helps us make a consistent quality product and fulfill our commitment to our customers.” More info: Herb Schreiber, CEO, Guardian Protective Devices; (856) 753-5007; guardpd@verizon.net or Sarrina Crowley, Mettler-Toledo Safeline, (813) 889-9500; sarrina.crowley@ mt.com.
