Spray February 2016 Spray 29 Committee; Sara Amundson, Humane Society; Brian Herrington, Scotts Miracle Gro and Ben Dunham, Dentons, LLC discussed legislation that will impact the formulated products industry in the coming year(s)—beginning with the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). “TSCA is still on track to pass,” Dunham said, while describing the various obstructions to the federal bill, and how proponents are working to overcome them. The Good, the Bad & the Alternatives “Sustainability” was the buzzword for CSPA's special sessions. At the Advancing Safer Chemistry workshop, Dr. Joel Tickner, Associate Professor at University of Massachusetts Lowell and Director of Chemicals & Policy Initiative at Lowell Center for Sustainability, challenged attendees to “move from getting rid of ‘bads’ to evaluating ‘goods’” when it comes to substitutions for ingredients in consumer products. Tickner said there are more than 20 approaches to alternative assessments linking toxicology to chemical design and the field would benefit from greater “cross-sector collaboration, scientific foundation and model approaches.” He recommended exploring models for an independent public-private institute for chemical alternatives. Retailers Session CSPA also hosted a special “Retailer Session,” highlighted by a panel discussion describing a partnership among The Dow Chemical Co., Unilever and the Global Public-Private Partnership for Handwashing (PPPHW) to attack a worldwide public health problem. Hanna Woodburn, Secretariat Director for PPPHW explained that annually, 1.7 million children from underdeveloped countries lose their lives to preventable diseases such as diarrhea and pneumonia due to lack of hygiene. In the spirit of collaboration, Dow and Unilever cooperated to formulate and manufacture a bar of soap that could be sold cheaply in third world countries, but would last long enough for sustained use, and also “feel good” after each wash. The bar was developed over a period of four years, and according to Unilever VP Peter Gallagher, more than a billion units have thus far been sold. Eunice Heath, Director of Sustainability, Dow Chemical; Clive Davies, Chief, Design for the Environment Branch, EPA; and Michael Chenard, Director of Corporate Sustainability, Lowe’s, discussed the growing role of Green chemistry and sustainability from the retailers’ and suppliers’ perspectives.
