Industry News Honeywell commenced full-scale production of HFO-1234ze, a lowglobal warming-potential (GWP) propellant, insulating agent and refrigerant, at its Baton Rouge, LA manufacturing facility. Marketed under Honeywell’s Solstice line of low GWP materials, HFO-1234ze has a GWP of less than one, according to the company. At a White House event last September, Honeywell pledged to increase production of low-GWP refrigerants, insulators, aerosol propellants and solvents, while reducing production of high- GWP hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) by 50% before 2020. HFO-1234ze is non-ozone depleting, non-flammable according to ASTM testing, and not a volatile organic compound (VOC). DuPont Fluorochemicals sold the marketing, sales and distribution rights to its pharmaceutical grade propellant HFC-227ea/P to Mexichem S.A.B. de C.V., where it will join the company’s ZEPHEX line of pharmaceutical propellants. ZEPHEX brand propellants are used in 75% of aerosol inhalers produced worldwide, according to the manufacturer. Additionally, DuPont sold the rights to its Dymel HFC 134a pharmaceutical propellant to India-based specialty chemicals firm SRF. After completing the sale, DuPont will terminate use of the Dymel brand and begin rebranding its HFC-152a and dimethyl ether products; Du- Pont Fluorochemicals is part of the Performance Chemicals segment, which DuPont plans to separate by mid-year, according to a recent announcement. Finally, DuPont announced its intention to spin off a new performance chemicals business in the U.S., called Chemours. The name is a nod to the company’s full name, E. I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. White pigment titanium dioxide and Fluoroproducts will make up the bulk of sales. The firm will occupy a building in Wilmington, DE 38 Spray February 2015 following DuPont’s departure from the city after over 100 years. DuPont shareholders will be entitled to shares in Chemours. Ball Corp. is expanding its Devizes, UK impact extruded aerosol can manufacturing plant, announcing the addition of a new high-speed line to meet growing European demand. UK-based fragrance firm CPL Aromas announced a relocation of its CPL USA division’s headquarters within New Jersey. Formerly based in Somerset, the new Scotch Plains facility will house the company’s U.S. sales team, led by VP Wendy Pickthall, as well as a warehouse. As part of a joint venture, CCL Industries and German-based aluminum slug producer Rheinfelden Semis GmbH announced an approximately $18 million investment in a new manufacturing plant in Clinton, NC. The facility will be jointly owned by both companies and will produce aluminum slugs used in the impact extrusion process to manufacture aerosol cans, tubes and bottles. Current plans call for capacity to reach 25,000 tons by 2018. The new business will trade as Rheinfelden Americas, LLC. Eastman Chemical Company became the first U.S.-based company to join Together for Sustainability (TfS), an initiative led by Europeanbased multinational chemical companies aimed at improving sustainability practices and raising awareness through shared information, such as assessments and audit results. Eastman worked with TfS to gain compliance with the initiative’s membership requirements in the hopes of expanding it to U.S.-based companies. A number of major specialty chemical companies are members of the TfS initiative, including AkzoNobel, BASF, DSM, Evonik, Henkel and Solvay. The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) approved Teva Pharmaceuticals’  application for a lower dose of its QNASL aerosol nasal allergy spray to be administered to children ages 4-11. The waterless intranasal spray is currently available for the treatment of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis in adults ages 12 and up; the 40mcg children’s formulation is expected to become available by prescription later this month. Allergic rhinitis is a chronic inflammatory disease with common symptoms including sneezing, nasal itch, runny nose and congestion. MeadWestvaco (MWV) announced plans to execute a tax-free spin off of the company’s specialty chemicals unit, resulting in two independent, publicly-traded companies. The separation is expected to be completed by the end of the year. The announcement follows Bloomberg-reported criticism of the company’s “conglomerate structure” by shareholder Starboard Value, LP.
