SATA meets in Point Clear… product lock-up, surveillance or line-of-sight placement. It has broad support from several Aldermen, the Latino Caucus and a coalition of ACE retailers. The amendment has objections from the Chicago Dept. of Streets & Sanitation. According to the GRC, retail restrictions do not reduce graffiti. Chicago is the only city in the world to ban spray paint, but it only hurts retailers (mostly small businesses), consumers and artists. It provides an unfair advantage for suburban/ border retailers, online spray paint retailers and affects potential sales tax revenue ($70 million in sales means $800k in potential sales tax revenue). Nekoomaram urged those with a presence in Chicago to send a company-signed letter in support of legislation to a local Alderman. Those without a presence in Chicago were asked to send a letter to the Mayor’s office and copy both the GRC and lobbyist John Dunn. A template was provided. Larry Seabolt, Remtech Engineers, presented Planning before the storm: Tabletop Disaster & Recovery Plans. If a company is going to practice a plan for evacuation or severe weather, it should practice a plan that deals with a larger scale situation, such as a disaster. Tabletop planning is an opportunity for team members who would be responsible for assessing and mitigating an emergency situation to talk through a response plan based on a scenario. Tabletop exercises can also be the starting point for a full scale training drill. Use a scenario that would involve most (if not all) of the facility with regards to evacuation/shelter-in-place and accountability and also look at situations that would require “outside” assistance. Test responder phone numbers/contacts. If the listed contractor in a plan is not available due to other commitments, what then? Learn the responsibility of other roles, i.e., what happens when (fill in the blank for key personnel) is out due to business, sickness or vacation. Who coordinates actions then? The tabletop exercise is an evaluation of the plan and how it works. Assess gaps in communication, assigned responsibility, availability of necessary tools, accountability to management and staff to plan accordingly in order to address a situation effectively. Cooperation among team members is crucial to performing tasks during an emergency and should be practiced beforehand. Use the exercise as an opportunity to highlight the good and the bad. Identifying what did not work is crucial in correcting the process, while illustrating the good will focus on further improvement and development of weak areas. The 36th annual Southern Aerosol Technical Association (SATA) Fall Conference met in October in Point Clear, AL. The meeting offered an array of networking opportunities, social activities and two days of educational sessions. SATA’s Spring Meeting will be held March 15–16 in Atlanta, GA. The event kicked off with an Industry Market Report from Jamie Brennan of Building Brands Together. There are four “Ps” to marketing, said Brennan: Product, Price, Place and Promotion and customer sentiment is based on measurement, touch points, engagement and current events. Customer product selection is not linear, but more of a loop, and it is important to market a product across as many channels as a company can afford. Marketers need to be engaged in the consumer journey, not just present a product. Tony Jackson, Aeropres, presented Energy Sector Update. To illustrate that the current volatility in energy prices is not new, he gave an overview of how natural and man-made events from the 19th C. onward have affected fuel prices drastically. Currently, the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and Russian operations are driving global fuel supplies. Javaneh Nekoomaram, Graffiti Resource Council (GRC), presented Graffiti Cleaners: Regulations. The GRC Provides information, education and legislative assistance to help communities prevent graffiti vandalism in a way that does not restrict the sale of spray paint to legitimate consumers. It offers solutions, best practices, research, volunteer programs, regulatory landscape of neighboring areas and model language for comprehensive ordinances. The GRC works with city councils, mayors, law enforcement, nonprofits and public works/city managers in both large and small cities. In May, a Spray Paint Amendment was introduced in Chicago, IL. The amendment repeals a spray paint ban for all consumers, except minors. Retail restrictions are required, but the retailer gets to chose between Brennan Jackson Nekoomaram Seabolt 28 Spray December 2016
