Industry News S.C. Johnson announced plans to voluntarily identify and disclose certain fragrance ingredients used in the company’s air care products. Labeling guidelines under the FDA’s Food, Drug and Cosmetic (FD&C) Act currently allow manufacturers to use “fragrance” as a blanket term for up to about 50 ingredients. S.C. Johnson will be the first major global manufacturer to publicly identify them in its consumer products. Beginning next spring, consumers who visit WhatsInsideSCJohnson.com will find, “a range of 10 to 50 fragrance ingredients, on average,” according to the company. Clinical studies have demonstrated a link between some fragrance ingredients used in consumer products and irritation or allergic reactions in users. The National Aerosol Association’s (NAA) 29th Annual Conference will take place March 3–5, 2015 at the JW Marriott in Palm Desert, CA. Pharmaceutical packaging supplier Gerresheimer AG opened a new development center in Dongguan, located in southern China’s Pearl River Delta, to meet growing demand for medical plastics, such as inhalers, in Asia. The new facility joins Gerresheimer’s existing operations in Wackersdorf, Germany and Peachtree City, GA. 46 Spray December 2014 Honeywell announced plans to ramp up production of its low-globalwarming potential (GWP) refrigerants and aerosols and cut production of high-GWP hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) in half by 2020 as part of President Barack Obama’s Climate Action Plan to work with industry leaders to reduce carbon emissions and prepare the U.S. for the impacts of climate change. By replacing HFCs with the company’s new Solstice propellant, Honeywell hopes to eliminate nearly 400 tons of CO2 emissions by 2025. Cosmoprof held its first ever “Cosmopack Symposium” Sept. 23 at the Trump Soho Hotel in New York, NY, connecting over 50 Italian suppliers with leading buyers in the global cosmetic packaging industry, including L’Oréal and Estée Lauder. Among those in attendance was Gian Luca Galletti, Italian Minister of the Environment, who lauded the strong culture of safety and environmental sensitivity in Italian cosmetic packaging. The symposium also served an exploratory purpose, providing encouraging feedback on the feasibility and success of a potential large-scale Cosmopack show in the U.S.—a concept similar to Cosmoprof North America in Las Vegas, an off-shoot of Cosmoprof Worldwide Bologna. Flavors and fragrances manufacturer Arylessence earned a Level 2 certification from the Safe Quality Food Institute (SQF), a globallyrecognized program of the Food Marketing Institute (FMI) dedicated to verifying and setting standards for food safety and quality. The rating comes after a year-long audit conducted by NSF International’s food safety division. A Level 2 certification signifies the presence of “certified hazard analysis and critical control points (HACCP)-based food safety plans.” The maximum rating is Level 3. Evonik opened a new production facility in Americana, São Paulo, Brazil to further enhance the company’s market position in the growing Brazilian and greater South American markets. Plans call for the facility to produce up to 55,000 tons of ingredients annually, according to the company. With the aim of strengthening presence in emerging African markets, Symrise commenced operations in Nigeria, incorporating an official subsidiary in Lagos, the nation’s capital and Africa’s second-fastest growing city. The subsidiary, incorporated as Nigeria Ltd., will operate facilities within both of Symrise’s divisions: Scent & Care and Flavor & Nutrition, and serve both local and regional customers in West Africa. Symrise also announced the opening of a vanilla extraction facility in Madagascar.With an approximate cost of €3 million ($3.75 million), the 37,700 square-foot facility will house facilities for extraction, analysis, quality control and storage. In advance of the June 1, 2015 deadline for adoption of the new Globally Harmonized System of Classification & Labeling of Chemicals (GHS)–as mandated by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)–Croda, Inc. will begin labeling drums and samples in accordance with the new system before the end of 2014. Elgin, CO city councilors approved a request from The Packaging Wholesalers for a tax incentive enabling the company to rehabilitate and occupy a former Ball Corp. aerosol and specialty container facility there. The 407,000 square-foot facility was opened by Ball in 1967 before ceasing operations in December 2013. The Packaging Wholesalers plans to invest $3 million in rebuilding the facility, with a projected completion date of April 2015. Spray
