The 45mm diameter aerosol line is suitable for beauty and personal care product applications, including shaving cream, makeup, hairspray, sun tan lotion, perfume, body spray and deodorant.  “Consumer lifestyles are increasingly hectic; smaller aerosol packaging is growing in popularity as it is easier and more convenient for people to take their favorite products in handbags, gym bags or personal luggage,” explained Melissa Quintana, Marketing Manager, CROWN Aerosol Packaging North America. “At the same time, these smaller formats are suitable for consumers who value the premium look and feel of personal care packaging but who are looking to either purchase smaller volumes of their favorite brands or prefer to trial new products without committing to the cost of buying full size containers.” With a slimmer and more ergonomic profile, the 45mm diameter line of aerosol containers has considerable aesthetic appeal for male and female consumers alike. In addition, advanced metal decorating techniques enable manufacturers to market small volumes of product in packaging that is just as luxurious as their full-size counterparts, helping reinforce a brand’s value and build shopper loyalty. Crown supports brands in this area by combining graphic design consultation with innovative lithographic capabilities, including 6-color and 4-color printing, ultraviolet (UV) inks available in any color, and a range of conventional, gloss and matte finishes or specialty textures. Together, brands can achieve a premium, high quality look and feel, and portray eye-catching designs that actively engage consumers in stores and at home, all with a cost-effective solution. Slim aerosol containers are also suitable for a variety of other markets, such as pharmaceutical and household goods, particularly for homes with limited storage. Crown currently offers a broad range of steel aerosol containers in the slim 45mm diameter line, with fill volumes ranging from 4.7oz up to 9.1oz, giving brand owners additional flexibility when packaging their products. On the nine year anniversary of its manufacturing plant becoming fully operational, DS Containers of Batavia, IL, unveiled two new can sizes. In an effort to keep up with customer demands for two-piece aerosol cans, two sizes— 211x315 (66x120) and 211x413 (66x142)—were added to its portfolio. The smallest can, 211x315, is geared towards the metered air freshener market and the 211x413 is a convenient option for shave cream and value sizes. Built specifically for its coil-to-can operation, its 236,000 square-foot plant produces tin-free steel cans with an interior and exterior polymer coating. Modeled after parent company Daiwa Can Co.’s technology, the modern cans have an integral dome, vibrant litho printing and no top or side seam. Their modern look appeals to marketers and consumers alike. The polymer-coated steel provides a BPA-free and corrosionresistant environment. Lighter than three-piece aerosol cans, the package delivers valuable sustainability benefits. Hutchinson-LJF, headquartered in Paris, France, recently launched a self-sealing piston aerosol can with inflatable piston. The fast acting, flexible piston helps guarantee total separation between the packaged product and the propellant. Advantages of an inflatable piston include no by-pass between the propellant and the product; no problems with minor dents in the side-wall of the can; no need for a protective sealing gel that could pollute if mixed with the packaged product; no propellant ejection when using the dispensing system and no contamination of the product with the propellant. Different elastomer grades can be provided to help ensure compatibility with packaged products. The can is compatible with all types of standard aerosol cans and valves and can be used at all angles. It uses either compressed gas or liquids as propellants. Continued on p. 40
