Antiperspirant a Review Aerosol antiperspirant/deodorants (AP/ Deo) have had a rather remarkable history. By 1977, when they utilized chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) propellants, they had captured about 90% of the underarm market. However, on April 1, 1978, all CFCs were banned, leaving the industry with no alternative but to replace them with low density, flammable hydrocarbon propellants. The combination of bad press and inferior formulations quickly shriveled the AP/Deo aerosol option to a mere 13% of the market, replaced mainly by stick and roll-on alternatives. Finally, the industry developed better formulations and consumers got used to the low density problem. By 1990, AP/Deo aerosols accounted for about 156 million units per year. However, in 1994, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) began its volatile organic compound (VOC) reduction program targeted at these products, requiring new, often more costly, formulations. By 2000, production dropped to about 80 million per year, but as formulas and packaging improved, production rose to about 360 million in 2015. Once a strictly tinplate province, now about 56% of the units are available in aluminum cans. (Source: the Consumer Specciality Products Association CSPA). The popularity of AP/Deo aerosols arises from society’s increasing intolerance of offensive body odors, better recognition of aerosols as a control option and their quick, 14 Spray August 2016 “no touch” application to both dry the underarm areas and replace natural, unpleasant odors with attractive ones. With current versions of aluminum chlorohydrate (ACH), the ability of aerosols to dry the underarm area is now on par with the alternative stick and roll-on products. Also, the low pH value and astringency of the AP/Deo product very effectively kills the Gram (+) and Gram (-) bacteria responsible for malodor production from apocrine sweat. The human body has millions of eccrine sweat glands, plus a much fewer number of apocrine glands. By means of perspiration, they both help control body temperatures that would RockFace AP/ Deo, a UK brand, was launched in Ireland in June. Aerosols... Montfort A. Johnsen, Ph.D. Technical Editor
