SPRAY On June 16, as part of a hearing on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) proposed revisions to the ozone standard and their potential impacts on industry and manufacturing, Mike Freeman, President of the Americas Division of WD-40 Co., testified in front of two subcommittees of the U.S. House Committee on Energy & Commerce: the Subcommittee on Energy & Power and the Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing & Trade. The EPA had proposed reducing the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) for criteria pollutants—including ground level ozone—from the 2008 levels of 75 parts per billion (ppb) to between 65 and 70 ppb. The aforementioned subcommittees held a joint hearing investigating the EPA’s proposed revisions and examining the potential consequences on jobs and business. Freeman represented the National Aerosol Association (NAA), as well as the aerosol industry as a whole, in arguing that ozone regulations be based not only on sound environmental science, but also appropriate cost/benefit analysis. The EPA, Freeman said, should primarily focus on areas that still in nonattainment with the current standard of 75 ppb before attempting to lower the standard further. “We all need to work together to find a way to achieve both economic growth and environmental progress,” said Freeman in his testimony. “They do not necessarily have to be mutually exclusive.” View the full testimony at http://1.usa.gov/1Ssb03k.
