Spray Technology & Marketing Commentary Ava Caridad, Editorial Director SPRAY staff attends many trade shows and conventions throughout the year, especially in the Spring and Fall, when “trade-show season” is its most active. I was approached at the SPRAY booth at Luxe Pack New York in May by a reader who told me they couldn’t wait for our annual Buyers Guide to come out in June. I replied that he would have to wait longer than that, as traditionally, the Buyers Guide comes out in July of each year. “No, wait!” I called after him, “It comes out in August this year!” He made a sad face, waved an acknowledgement and disappeared into the crowd. I’m glad he heard me. That’s right, after many years of appearing in July, the annual Buyers Guide and Corporate Profiles have moved to August. “Why?” you may ask, and I would be hard pressed to give you a single answer. It was decided one day that it would just simply be better for readers and staff if both appeared in the August issue. The theme of the CSPA Mid-Year meeting last May, another Spring meeting we attend, was “Driving Change through Creative Disruption.” The gist was that disruption (people and ideas) can be creative forces in established companies who may or may not want to drive change to remain competitive. This all sounds great on paper or when up on a dais, but saying companies appreciate disruptive, innovative staff is one thing… staff actually being appreciated (and perhaps not fired) is another. This sentiment was echoed at my table; how do disruptors not get mistakenly labeled “troublemakers”? What if the culture of your job just doesn’t want to change (I mean, really not want to change)? Well, I have no good answer for that and neither did the speaker, if truth be told, but that’s OK. We got the point. Luckily for all involved, SPRAY embraced this “creative interruption” wholeheartedly and the result is, in this editor’s opinion, our most streamlined, up-to-date, concise Buyers Guide and Corporate Profiles yet. Readers can hang onto their August issue for future reference or access the guide online all year at www.spraytm.com. However one likes to access it, we hope you find it useful.
