Pressure Points continued from p. 10 Even if we eliminated all man-made VOCs, natural VOCs would run the NOx engine. Agencies therefore responded by targeting NOx reductions. NOx levels have been lowered significantly during the past 25 years. Today, there are few regions even briefly experiencing MIR conditions. By the time NOx is reduced enough to attain healthy ozone levels, our low-reactivity VOCs will have almost no impact on ozone. Both time and science may be on our side in this second ozone-related issue. If all goes well, the aerosol products industry may be able to move beyond both ozone issues in the foreseeable future. Spray 1 CSMA Pressurized Products Surveys, 1973-1982 2 This is often referred to as VOClimited versus NOx-limited atmospheric conditions. An additional irony is that VOC photochemical reactivity tends to inversely correlate with both Ozone Depletion Potential and Global Warming Potential, since high reactivity lowers a VOCs atmospheric half-life.
