Baudin April 2015 Spray 35 SPRAY talks to CFA President Gilles Baudin ADF arranged for Spray to meet with Gilles Baudin, Packaging Expertise Dept., L’Orèal, who is the current President of the French Aerosols Committee (CFA) and VP of the European Aerosol Federation (FEA). According to Baudin, the CFA aims to bring together suppliers, fillers and brand owners, allowing them to grow in a sustainable way to benefit both consumers and manufacturers. Further goals are professional sustainability through product quality, consumer safety and ingredient transparency. His challenge is to increase the representation of CFA and therefore increase membership so that 80% of all French aerosol actors are represented. “We set our sights high because of the tradition in France of a more active regulatory climate,” stated Baudin. “For instance, France was one of the very first countries to regulate the ingredient Bisphenol A (BPA) in packaging. This is a huge challenge for the industry.” In commenting on the introduction of more plastic aerosols into the marketplace, Baudin believes CFA’s and all aerosol associations’ position should be to help international regulation harmonization and avoid any conflict between different materials. He feels that plastic represents a huge opportunity for new aerosol applications. In some cases, it represents better formulation compatibility, according to Baudin, who specifically commented that no container innerlining is needed when plastic is utilized, thereby helping to eliminate the use of BPA in packaging. He also feels that improvements in material performance provide safe solutions. “Industry must take the opportunity to grow, but must do so in a sustainable way,” said Baudin. He is optimistic and feels the aerosol industry moves forward in the area of plastics with very high concern. “This very young technical solution must demonstrate its total safety and the profession must help to build an accurate regulation,” he concluded.
