I recently came upon this photo and had to laugh. Just when you thought nobody could successfully rip-off the art of Andy Warhol one more time, here comes Mr. Brainwash, a.k.a. Thierry Guetta, a Paris-born, Los Angeles-based street artist. In 2011, the Toronto International Film Festival commissioned Mr. Brainwash to create a series of giant aerosol cans for display at the event. There were cans touting “Science Fiction Spray,” “Scary Movie Spray,” etc., as well as the one pictured here, which is in equal parts an homage to Warhol, aerosols, Campbell’s Tomato Soup and the film festival itself. The cans were a big hit, and it never ceases to amaze me that Warholian influences and appreciation are still so strong more than 50 years after he first hit the New York art scene. I volunteer each year at the Montclair Film Festival (whose official slogan is “It’s like Sundance, only Jersier”), and a dream of mine is to someday volunteer at the Toronto Film Festival. Not attend it, but work there for free! For me, it’s the Holy Grail of film festivals, and seeing these images of big, beautiful, film-themed aerosol cans just solidifies my desire to get there one day. ¡Nos vemos en Madrid! It has been three years since the last European Aerosol Federation (FEA) Congress & Exhibition was held in Rome, and this month, after much anticipation, the 28th FEA Congress & 17th Aerosol Exhibition meets in sunny Spain at the Madrid North Convention & Congress Centre. As we go to press, the preliminary program is available at http://www. aerosolmadrid2013.com. Check it out for a breakdown of the various presentations available in the areas of Business & the Market, Innovation & the Future and Aerosol Technology. Don’t forget to stop by our booth and say Hola. Can’t make it to the show? Then be sure to check out coverage of the Congress and Exhibition in upcoming issues of Spray. Hasta pronto, mis amigos, Editor Ava Caridad, Editor chrisframpton.net
