Industry News The British Aerosol Manufacturers’ Association (BAMA) will hold its annual forum October 16 and 17 at the Belfry Hotel in Sutton Coldfield, UK. £3,000 ($5,038) in combined prizes for member companies is up for grabs at the Awards Dinner, which will be held on the 16th. Non-members are eligible to attend the forum and be considered for awards provided membership applications are received by September 8. BAMA also announced a relaunch of its website, www.bama.co.uk, complete with a revamped members-only section with resources such as legislation information, training courses and relevant industry news. Aluminum aerosol can sales experienced record growth of 8.6% in Germany in 2013, according to Gesamtverband der Aluminiumindustrie (GDA), which represents the aluminum industry there. The early outlook for Spring and Summer 2014 is equally positive, according to GDA. Several German aluminum packaging companies will present their innovations at Interpack, May 8 to 14 in Düsseldorf. Unilever intends to build a manufacturing plant in Ethiopia, hoping to mimic the success of a similar expansion into Vietnam, the company said. It is SC Johnson’s eighth zero landfill manufacturing facility, joining two in China and one each in Canada, Pakistan, Poland, the Netherlands and the U.S. The European Union Reference Laboratory for Alternatives to Animal Testing (EURL ECVAM) released a statement confirming the viability of KeratinoSens, Givaudan’s method of testing products for possible skin allergens. Animal testing for cosmetics ingredients was banned in the European Union last year, creating a need for alternative testing such as KeratinoSens, which uses genetically-engineered skin cells with a gene found in fireflies that causes the cells to emit light when contacted by an allergen. In June, Independent Cosmetic Manufacturers and Distributors (ICMAD) will celebrate 40 years of promoting the interests of small businesses in the cosmetics industry. Founded on June 5, 1974 by seven entrepreneurs, ICMAD has since grown to over 700 members. Despite political and economic uncertainty in Crimea, German-based Henkel announced that it had no plans to cease operations in Russia or Ukraine, where the company earned about €1 billion ($1.4 billion) last year. The rouble, Russia’s national currency, has declined in value by 20% against the U.S. dollar since unrest began in Ukraine last November. Kao Corporation, supplier of fragrance chemicals, appointed Univar as its exclusive distributor in Italy. Kao, which manufactures fragrances used in perfumes and household cleaning, laundry and personal care products, will join Univar’s portfolio of over 3,500 chemical producers. Alban Muller was presented the Green Ingredient Awards’ gold medal at the In- Cosmetics 2014 trade show in Hamburg, Germany for its environmentally-friendly efforts, including the development of its natural, anti-aging and Vitamin C-rich Scurvy Grass Extract. Japanese beauty firm Kose Corp. has announced the purchase of U.S. skin care and cosmetics firm Tarte, and will use it as an inroad into the U.S. market. Kose’s acquisition of a 93.5% stake in the company is reported to be worth $135 million. Kose is buying out Encore Consumer Capital’s entire stake in the U.S. beauty company, as well as most of Tarte Founder Maureen Kelly’s shares. Kose said Tarte’s existing management will remain in place. FutureFuel announced an agreement allowing Viachem Ltd. to sell its Performance Chemicals line in the U.S. Viachem is a Plano, TX-based firm which specializes in marketing and distribution of chemical products.
