remains standard, the throat dimensions can vary. Aluminum or ETP valve mounting cups may be used, assuming product compatibility, but aluminum cannot be supplied with PP laminate coatings. This limits the industry to cans with thin epon-phenolic or polyamideimide linings and either ETP cups or to aluminum valve cups with thin linings and lathe cut gaskets. If an ETP valve cup is used the well diameter (Dimension J, see page 30) is not a problem and the crimp depth guideline of 0.183" has been used successfully. With an aluminum cup, typically 0.003" thicker than the ETP cups, the lathe cut gasket also permits the use of the 0.203" guideline. Firms should use these guidelines as initial targets to develop specifications; they should also solicit advice from valve supplier experts. Specifications typically have tolerances of ± 0.005", but a range of at least ± 0.004" to ±0.010" is currently in use. This brief paper has had to omit such aspects as mathematical developments, the use of Aptar “Taper Seal” (Registered) mounting cups and other crimping technicalities. A review of the recommended literature will be useful in developing further crimping expertise.
