Industry News California’s South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) announced that Solstice Performance Fluid, a new solvent developed by Honeywell, is not a volatile organic compound (VOC) that will negatively affect the environment. The solvent, which was granted SCAQMD’s VOC exemption, is intended as a sustainable alternative to HCFC-225, which is currently being phased out by regulatory agencies due to its high ozone depletion and global warming potential. Colgate-Palmolive announced it will make three of its four main packaging categories, home, pet and personal care, 100% recyclable by 2020, following talks with As You Sow, a non-profit organization devoted to promoting environmental and social corporate responsibility. It also pledged to work toward developing a fully recyclable toothpaste tube or package. Avon Products, Inc. was forced to pay $135 million as a result of a U.S. government investigation into allegations the cosmetic company paid bribes in China and other countries. The investigation, which goes back to 2008, has seen the resignation of Avon’s former CEO, Andrea Jung. The company will pay sums of $68 million and $67 million to the Justice Department and Securities & Exchange Commission (SEC), respectively, to settle the charges. Unilever announced plans to close its Bramalea, Ontario manufacturing plant, transferring production to the company’s Independence, MO facility. The plant is expected to be fully closed by March 2016. Italian exports of personal care and cosmetic products rose 11% from 2012 to 2013, despite a 1.2% decline in the country’s domestic market, according to new figures from the trade association Cosmetica Italia. Imports rose by 0.8% over the same time frame. Not Your Mother’s, a U.S. hair care brand, expanded into more than 10,000 stores and doubled its SKU count in the first quarter of 2014, according to the manufacturer.
