As California is a bellwether state, our activity in Sacramento gave industry the clout to help make lawmakers form more reasonable and timely decisions in resolving the ozone issue. This ultimately led to the formal incorporation of the WAIB in 1979. Over time, the WAIB has developed strong leadership and the present Board of Directors and its Executive Committee represent that growth. The positive position that we took in legislation and public affairs, coupled with our strong public relations programs, stands as testimony to our purpose and continues to remain strong. The WAIB’s first major public relations program was in 1976 in the form of the film “Genie in the Lamp of Science.” Costing over $28,000, the film featured one of the first products delivered by an aerosol system: an insecticide used during World War II to protect U.S. servicemen from insects carrying diseases such as malaria. That original aerosol canister may have seemed like some kind of magic wand, but today’s aerosol has become a staple item for millions of household and commercial consumers—a classic example of American technology at its best. The ultimate support of the CSMA Aerosol Packaging Council (APC) and the late Dr. Joyce Brothers, who appeared on behalf of the aerosol industry on TV, radio and at business conferences, set the tone. Our Speakers Bureau visited universities, colleges and high schools to disseminate information in a timely and professional manner. It gives me great pride to have been involved in the activities and development of this great process and to know that we have strong, talented and determined new blood that will provide us with continued success in the future.
