The latest in personal care launches... “The desire to ‘try on’ a scent before committing isn’t about to go away, but there is real appeal for consumers in the immediacy of replenishing the supply of their favorite scents from the comfort of wherever they are,” said Karen Grant, NPD VP & Global Industry Analyst. Gift sets led the pack, representing 46% of direct-toconsumer prestige fragrance sales in the U.S., ahead of standalone fragrances that accounted for 44% of sales. Gift set sales grew 9% compared to the previous 12 months. Men’s fragrances represent a smaller portion of the sales than women’s in both prestige department stores and direct-to-consumer channels. However in both cases, men’s fragrances outperformed the women’s and the overall market in the 12 months ending February 2014. NPD’s BeautyTrends Direct showed a 19% increase in dollar sales of men’s prestige fragrances during this time. According to Shannon Romanowski, Beauty & Personal Care Analyst at market research firm Mintel, consumers are increasingly expressing an interest in other added value fragrance benefits as well. For instance, 60% of consumers would like to try a scent that could help relieve colds and headaches; 52% of men aged 18-34 are interested in mobile apps to help them choose a fragrance; 48% report interest in fragrances that offer a cooling or heating sensation; and 35% of respondents were interested in fragrances specifically made for hair. For both men and women this summer, Bond No. 9 launched its newest unisex beach scent, Shelter Island. The starter notes are fresh citrus zest and freshly ground black pepper; mid-notes are comprised of white lilies and briny algae extract. Base notes include musk and oud. The bottle is supplied by Bormioli Luigi. G u c c i Made to Measure is a new masculine fragrance conceived by Gucci creative director Frida Giannini. The composition is oriental-spicy and “tailormade” like an expensive suit. Its initial notes have accords of Calabrian bergamot, Tunisian orange blossom, French lavender and aniseed. The heart includes notes of nutmeg from Sri Lanka, water lily, juniper berries, plum and cinnamon. The base is comprised of labdanum, patchouli, leather and amber. In addition to the fragrance, Gucci Made to Measure is available in After Shave Lotion, After Shave Balm, Shower Gel, Deodorant Stick and Travel Size. SPRAY June 2014 SPRAY 17
