12 SPRAY June 2014 Complete Beauty: The latest in personal care BY AVA CARIDAD, EDITORIAL DIRECTOR Makers of mass-market hair and skin products are heading into new pricing territory in the form of a $30+ can of hair spray or skin care product that straddles “mass market” and “prestige.” While “masstige” personal care products are not new, more “mass” players such as big-box chains and drugstores now sell products similar to the “prestige” offerings sold at department stores, according to The Wall Street Journal. Mass brands from Unilever are boldly pushing prices up to $25 and beyond for products with premium ingredients, selling them alongside traditional lower-priced products. To justify the higher prices, many “masstige” products claim to offer solutions to specific problems. Consumers are more inclined to want the best quality product for a specific need, and the higher price itself may be an indicator of quality. The Power of Pomegranate Pomegranate’s anti-oxidative effect appeals to makers of skin care products because of its efficacy and consumer appeal. The pomegranate plant has been cultivated for thousands of years and was one of the first known medicines used by ancient Egyptians and Greeks. The plant reportedly delivers antioxidant and antiviral activity, and improves the effectiveness of topical preparations. Other benefits of pomegranates include enhanced collagen production, sun-damage protection and antiinflammatory properties.
