Spray Patterns BY AVA CARIDAD Editor Mega Airless— producer of all-plastic, neutral airless dispensing—announced plans for a new, 15,000 m² production site in Villingen, Germany. The new facility will handle production for the company’s cosmetic and pharmaceutical customers, including moulding, assembly, logistics, and decoration (such as silk-screening, labeling and hot-stamping). According to CEO Lucyna Silberstein, the new facility is designed for optimal efficiency and will actually beat Germany’s EnEV 2009 energy savings requirements by 22%, thanks to intelligent construction and HVAC design. In addition to such features as daylight dependent lighting controls, the building’s energy consumption is reduced through capture of waste heat from the injection molding process and ventilation system and storage of heat in underground sprinkler tanks. The company plans to move to its new site in the first quarter of 2014, with construction completed by the end of this year. Pictured: Groundbreaking at Villingen, Germany. Hawaiian Tropic announced that the company has retired its Miss Hawaiian Tropic Bikini Contests and is launching an online search for the “New Face” of Hawaiian Tropic. The brand, which introduced new formulas and updated packaging in recent years, is inviting women to enter their nationwide Facebook contest and become the brand’s new spokesperson. The woman who best embodies everything Hawaiian Tropic stands for—beauty, confidence, style, enjoying the sun and keeping skin healthy—will appear in Hawaiian Tropic advertising, receive an all-expense-paid tropical vacation and serve as an official brand spokesperson. As part of its ongoing commitment to providing environmentally responsible packaging solutions, Crown Holdings, Inc. participated in several national and local events designed to promote recycling and provide charitable support, including 2013’s Great American Can Roundup Industry Challenge, organized by The Can Manufacturers Institute (CMI). The annual Can Roundup, which promotes can recycling and aims to raise $1 million for various charitable organizations, began in mid-January and runs until Oct. 15, 2013. During the drive, Crown’s aerosol, beverage, closures, food and speciality packaging facilities around the U.S. serve as collection points for recycling empty beverage cans in the community. These cans are combined with the cans Crown’s employees bring from home or consume on-site, and are then redeemed for cash, with the funds being donated to charity. The facility that recycles the most pounds of cans per capita will win the 2013 Great American Can Roundup and be recognized on Nov. 15. Awareness for the recyclability of aerosol containers continues to grow, said Crown, and aerosol cans are being recycled today in over 2,000 communities nationwide with ongoing curbside and drop-off recycling programs. In addition, Crown Aerosol Packaging North America’s aerosol plant in Faribault, MN uses variable frequency technology to adjust power in the facility, reducing annual energy use on production lines by 9%. Crown’s Mexico City aerosol packaging plant utilizes an eco-friendly process to clean and reuse rags that would have been thrown out, lowering the hazardous waste inventory by 82%. BASF employee volunteers joined Morris Habitat for Humanity to build homes for three families in Madison, NJ. More than 30 BASF employees worked on various aspects of construction, installing roofs, exterior walls and exterior frames for the homes. Morris Habitat for Humanity helps reduce the community’s carbon footprint by incorporating sustainable building practices during construction. All three homes will be Energy Star certified for energy efficiency. New homeowners will contribute 300 hours of labor and learn the importance of sustainability at mandatory homeownership classes.
