A big plant for smaller packages… North American packaging firm expands its aerosol can production into Kentucky. Montebello Packaging was founded in 1952 in the town of Montebello, Quebec, Canada by European entrepreneurs with experience in tube manufacturing. Fifteen years later, the operation moved to its present location in Hawkesbury, Ontario and has expanded six times. The most significant growth followed major investments in 1980 by then owners, Innocan Investments. In 1983, Montebello became part of Innopac, Inc. In 1990 Montebello Packaging became a member of The Jim Pattison family of companies. Montebello Packaging is now a wholly owned subsidiary of the Jim Pattison Group, which is the second largest privately held company in Canada, with sales of over $7.5 billion; 35,000 employees and 473 locations around North America and the world. It has been in business for over 50 years and has over 60 years of experience in making aluminum packaging products, including aerosol cans, laminate tubes and plastic collapsible tubes for the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, industrial and food industries. In 2005, Montebello entered the North American aerosol can market, offering a varied selection of aerosol cans for different diameters and heights. Its focus during the first 10 years has been on cans of 38mm or less, including 38mm, 35mm, 31.7mm, 25mm, 22mm and 16 mm cans. As a 28 Spray June 2013 response to customers who asked Montebello Packaging for larger sized cans, it has recently opened a new state-of-the-art can plant next to its Lebanon, Kentucky aluminum tube manufacturing facility. This plant has been in operation for over eight months, and is now producing the first cans made in North America with nine-color artwork, according to Thomas Zopf, VP of Sales for Montebello Packaging. “Montebello Packaging currently manufactures 45mm and 53mm diameter cans on the new line, and will be expanding the offering to 59mm and 66mm diameter cans in the near future,” explained Zopf. “This brand new line was manufactured in Europe, and includes the latest technology for verification of print quality and critical can dimensions… Montebello uses use the term ‘large can’ to segregate our existing smaller diameter can business from the new aerosol manufacturing capabilities of the new Lebanon aluminum aerosol can plant. This allows the company to quickly track progress towards our goals. In fact, all the can diameters we Thomas Zopf currently manufacture are sizes that are standard in the aerosol market, although we do manufacture some unique shapes and styles of aerosol cans,” Zopf said. Location, location, location… Montebello’s latest major expansion in the production of large aerosol cans is through the development of a new 120,000 square foot facility in Lebanon, KY—built next to the existing aluminum tube plant. The ground breaking for the new facility was in early 2012, with completion in August 2012.
